Al Qalqali Marine Reserve Established In Khorfakkan By Sheikh Dr. Sultan Bin Mohammed Al Qasimi

His Highness Sheikh Dr. Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Sharjah, has decreed the establishment of "Al Qalqali Marine Reserve" in Khorfakkan, Sharjah. This decree outlines the creation of a natural marine reserve with specific geographical boundaries as detailed in the accompanying aerial map and plan.

The decree prohibits any activities that could harm the ecosystem or wildlife within the reserve. These include hunting, transporting, or harming marine organisms unless permitted by the competent authority. It also bans introducing non-native species and damaging geological formations or habitats.

Establishment of Al Qalqali Marine Reserve

Federal Law No. 24 of 1999 on Environmental Protection guides these prohibitions. The law aims to prevent pollution of soil, water, or air in the reserve. Recreational activities that might harm wildlife are also restricted without proper authorisation.

Construction and industrial activities within the reserve require permits from the competent authority. This ensures that any development aligns with environmental protection standards and does not disrupt the natural balance.

The competent authority is tasked with managing the reserve's operations. They must coordinate with local councils and municipalities for effective management. Additionally, they will work with Sharjah Police to enforce legal compliance within the reserve.

The head of this authority will issue necessary administrative decisions to ensure smooth functioning and adherence to regulations. This includes monitoring for violations and implementing corrective measures where needed.

Legal Consequences for Violations

Violators of this decree face penalties under Federal Law No. 24 of 1999. They are also liable for compensation and costs related to damage removal as determined by the competent authority. This ensures accountability for actions that threaten the reserve's integrity.

The decree further protects all living organisms within the reserve, including birds using it as a breeding ground or resting site. Activities around the reserve that might impact its environment require permits from relevant authorities.

This initiative underscores Sharjah's commitment to preserving its natural heritage while balancing development needs through stringent environmental regulations.
