Al-Makkatain Museum In Jeddah Showcases Makkah And Madinah's Historical Journey Through Art

The Al-Makkatain Museum in Jeddah offers a unique glimpse into the history of Makkah and Madinah. It features historical artworks by both Muslim and non-Muslim artists spanning five centuries. The museum also presents a photographic journey of these cities, starting from the earliest known images taken in 1297 AH (1880 CE) to contemporary times.

Located in Jeddah Park, the museum is organised into three main sections. These are: Before the Invention of the Camera (1550–1880), Early Photographers of Makkah and Madinah (1880–1920), and The Golden Age of Photography (1920–Present). Each section highlights different aspects of visual documentation over time.

Before photography became widespread in 1839, travellers, Orientalists, and artists depicted their views of the Two Holy Mosques through detailed illustrations. These artworks were etched onto hard surfaces like copper and metal before being printed and published. Professional artists often modified these drawings to enhance them for printing.

As a result, printed versions sometimes varied significantly from the original illustrations. This process added artistic touches that altered the initial works. Despite these changes, these illustrations provided valuable insights into how people perceived Makkah and Madinah during those times.

Photography introduced a new level of accuracy in documenting Makkah and Madinah. Unlike illustrations, photographs captured exact visual records at specific moments. This allowed for a more realistic portrayal of places, customs, and eras that have since evolved.
