Al-Khobar Joins Elite List Of Smart Cities In 2024, Reflecting Saudi Vision 2030 Achievements
Al-Khobar has recently been recognized as a smart city, securing the 99th position out of 142 cities globally, according to the International Institute for Management Development (IMD). This announcement places Al-Khobar alongside Riyadh, Makkah, Madinah, and Jeddah, making it the fifth Saudi city to achieve this status. This milestone reflects the significant strides made by the Kingdom in enhancing its urban environments through advanced technologies and sustainable practices, aligning with the objectives set forth in Saudi Vision 2030.
The IMD’s Smart City Index serves as a critical measure of a city's ability to adopt and implement digital solutions to improve the quality of life for its residents. It assesses various factors including health and safety, employment, education, mobility, cultural activities, and governance. The focus is also on how these cities manage to strike a balance between economic growth, technological advancements, and the well-being of their citizens. Smart cities are at the forefront of using digital technology to optimize resource use, minimize carbon footprints, and enhance interaction with their inhabitants.

Eng. Omar Al-Abdullatif, CEO of Sharqia Development Authority, shared his enthusiasm over Al-Khobar’s inclusion in the Smart City Index. He highlighted that this recognition is a testament to the comprehensive development happening across the Kingdom under its visionary leadership and the guidance of the governor of the Eastern Province. The achievement not only showcases Al-Khobar’s readiness to embrace smart technologies but also its potential to draw in international investments, new businesses, and projects which are expected to spur economic growth and generate employment opportunities.
The inclusion of Al-Khobar in the IMD’s Smart City Index underscores the Kingdom's commitment to fostering urban environments that are technologically advanced yet sustainable. This approach aims at creating cities that are not only efficient and safe but also offer a high quality of life for their residents. As Saudi Arabia continues on its path towards achieving the goals outlined in Vision 2030, the recognition of its cities on international platforms like the IMD’s Smart City Index highlights the progress being made towards building a future that harmonizes technological innovation with human-centric development.
