Al-Jouf International Olive Festival Drives Tourism And Economic Growth In The Kingdom
The 18th Al-Jouf International Olive Festival has become a significant event for tourism and the economy in Saudi Arabia and the Al-Jouf region. It draws interest from both local and international visitors and investors. Held at the Prince Abdullah Cultural Center in Sakaka from January 2 to 12, the festival features participants from various sectors, including olive producers, processing industries, companies, and agricultural associations.
Al-Jouf is celebrated as the "land of olives" in Saudi Arabia, hosting the world's largest olive farm according to Guinness World Records. The region boasts over 23 million olive trees that yield 150,000 tons of table olives each year. These are processed by around 30 local presses to produce high-quality olive oil. The area includes more than 16,000 farms dedicated to olive cultivation.

The festival supports small businesses, entrepreneurs, and families involved in cottage industries by providing spaces for them to display their products. This initiative helps them grow and reach new consumers and partners. Omar bin Abdulaziz Al-Hamwan, the festival's CEO, highlighted its role as an icon of Al-Jouf due to its unique position in olive production. The region produces over 20,000 tons of oil annually, accounting for 80% of Saudi Arabia's total output.
This year's festival has attracted international attention with participation from seven countries: Spain, Italy, Türkiye, Egypt, Jordan, Syria, and Palestine. It features contributions from 45 farmers and five agricultural companies. Additionally, the Al-Jouf Municipality laboratory has conducted over 2,100 tests on samples from participating farmers. They analyzed more than 40 tons of oil and seven tons of table olives for acidity levels, rancidity, and metal content.
Products that meet safety standards receive a certification label confirming their quality for display. The festival also highlights Saudi heritage through various cultural showcases such as folk art performances like the Saudi Ardah. Traditional fashion displays include handicrafts like Sadu weaving alongside plastic arts exhibitions.
Poetry readings and cultural evenings further enrich the festival experience by celebrating local traditions. These activities not only entertain but also educate visitors about the rich cultural tapestry of Saudi Arabia.
The Al-Jouf International Olive Festival continues to strengthen its reputation as a vital event for both economic growth and cultural exchange within the Kingdom. By fostering international collaboration and showcasing local talent, it plays a crucial role in promoting Saudi Arabia's agricultural prowess on a global stage.
