Al-Jouf Excels In Fusion Of Local And Global Fruit Production Techniques

Al-Jouf Region farmers harvest fruits from over two million trees throughout the year. These fruits, known for their exceptional quality and taste, are featured in markets. Al-Jouf has earned a reputation as the Kingdom's food basket due to its diverse agricultural products.

The region resembles an open-air fruit festival, offering a wide range of fruits that brighten homes, farms, and markets for most of the year. Al-Jouf is often called the fruit basket because of the copious amounts of grapes, stone fruits, and citrus fruits produced on its fertile land.

According to the National Center for the Prevention and Control of Plant Pests and Animal Diseases statistics, the region boasts over 1.3 million fruit and stone fruit trees, alongside 816,000 palm trees. The farms yield over 170,000 tons of fruit annually, supplying local and international markets.

This supply contributes to food security, supports farmers and producers, and provides consumers with high-quality natural products. Fruit harvesting takes place year-round, peaking between May and December with figs, grapes, peaches, apricots, lemons, oranges, and tangerines being picked.

Al-Jouf's bountiful produce includes a wide assortment of fruits such as grapes, apples, figs, pears, peaches, watermelons, plums, and berries. This is thanks to its favourable environmental conditions and access to fresh water in Tabarjal Governorate.

Diverse Cultivation

The region also cultivates nectarines, pomegranates, pistachios, almonds, and other fruits. The success of cultivating tropical and international fruits in Al-Jouf has spurred farmers to experiment with new varieties like passionfruit from Brazil and pineapples.

Additionally, unique local fruit trees native to Al-Jouf are being exported for processing industries. Both public and private sectors in the region support fruit cultivation and production.

Government Initiatives

The Ministry of Environment, Water, and Agriculture champions cultivating specific fruit varieties through the Sustainable Agricultural Rural Development Program (Reef Saudi). Associations and government bodies offer training programs for farmers in agricultural production.

The fruits of Al-Jouf attract visitors and tourists. They offer a unique experience to explore farms and orchards while purchasing fresh fruits and processed products. These fruits combined with the region's natural beauty make Al-Jouf a significant tourist destination.
