Al-Jouf's 23 Million Olive Trees Drive Agricultural Productivity And Tourism Development
The olive industry in Al-Jouf has become a vital part of the region's economy and tourism, with 23 million trees contributing to agricultural productivity and food security. This aligns with the region's development goals. Al-Jouf is home to 88% of Saudi Arabia's olive trees, benefiting from abundant water, fertile soil, and a moderate climate ideal for olive farming.
Annually, Al-Jouf produces around 18,000 tons of olive oil and 150,000 tons of table olives from its 16,000 farms. The Al-Jouf International Olive Festival, held 17 times so far, plays a crucial role in promoting olive cultivation and boosting the local economy and tourism. This festival offers producers a platform to connect with markets and expand their reach.

Olive harvesting in Al-Jouf starts in early October with the Arbequina variety. The Arbosana variety follows from mid-November to mid-December. The region features about 30 modern olive presses equipped with advanced technology for efficient oil extraction. These facilities use electronic control panels and sophisticated harvesting equipment.
Efforts to support the olive sector include a research project by King Saud University in collaboration with Waqaa. This initiative aims to protect olive trees from pests and diseases. Additionally, Al-Jouf Municipality maintains product quality through a dedicated laboratory and quality label system.
The Olive Producers Association plays a significant role in supporting farmers by providing training, guidance, and market access initiatives. Currently, the association is developing an olive complex to improve processing, packaging, and marketing capabilities. This development aims to enhance the overall efficiency of the industry.
The olive industry in Al-Jouf extends beyond oil production. Various parts of the olive tree are used in different industries such as personal care products like soap and shampoo. Additionally, they are utilized in animal feed and charcoal production, showcasing the versatility of this sector.
The thriving olive sector in Al-Jouf not only boosts agricultural productivity but also supports food security efforts in line with regional goals. The combination of natural resources and strategic initiatives ensures that this industry remains a cornerstone of economic growth in the area.
