Conservation Efforts Lead To Thriving Al Ghada Trees In Saudi Reserve

The Imam Turki bin Abdullah Royal Reserve, spanning 91,500 square kilometres, has seen a notable resurgence in vegetation. This improvement is due to the reserve's efforts to prevent overgrazing and tree cutting. The recent rains have also contributed to the diversity and abundance of plant life.

Among the plants flourishing in the reserve is Al Ghada, scientifically known as Haloxylon persicum or white saxual. This tree, which can grow over 3 metres tall and live up to 70 years, is well-known in the deserts of Saudi Arabia, the Arabian Gulf, the Levant, and Iraq. Its roots extend deep into the ground to access water, making it resilient in dry conditions.

The white saxual plays a crucial role in stabilising sand dunes and preventing soil erosion. It is also used in various countries for pasture rehabilitation, forest restoration along desert roadsides, and manufacturing furniture, paper, and dyes.

The reserve has undertaken numerous afforestation campaigns and initiatives aimed at enhancing vegetation cover and combating desertification. These efforts include planting local trees and wild plants like the white saxual.
