Al-Duwayd Mosque: Preserving Najdi Architectural Heritage In Saudi Arabia

The Al-Duwayd Mosque, nestled within the archaeological village of Al-Duwayd, stands as a testament to the rich cultural heritage of Saudi Arabia's northern border region. Located 20 kilometres east of Al-Uwaiqila Governorate, this mosque spans an area of 137.5 square metres and is heralded as one of the oldest religious structures in the vicinity. Constructed seven decades ago, its architecture is a prime example of the traditional Najdi style, renowned for its clay construction techniques and the use of natural materials designed to withstand the harsh desert climate.

The design of Al-Duwayd Mosque incorporates unique features such as small windows on the southern walls, arranged in a strip line to allow sunlight while reducing cold during winter months. The ceiling is deliberately kept low to retain warmth, showcasing an ingenious adaptation to the local environment. This mosque not only serves as a place of worship but also as a symbol of the architectural ingenuity prevalent in Saudi Arabia's past.

Al-Duwayd village, where the mosque is situated, holds significant historical value. It is recognized as one of the oldest and most important historical sites in the northern border region. Furthermore, it was a bustling meeting point for merchants from Najd, Iraq, and the Levant seven decades ago.

Adding to its historical significance, Al-Duwayd village is home to the oldest civil airport in the northern border region and one of the earliest in the Kingdom, with its ruins still visible today. Another notable site within the village is the "Market for Watching," which also has remnants that attract visitors interested in exploring Saudi Arabia's rich history.
