Al Dhafra Grand Kingfish Championship 2024: Celebrating UAE's Rich Sea Heritage
Under the auspices of H.H. Sheikh Hamdan bin Zayed Al Nahyan, the Ruler's Representative in Al Dhafra Region, the concluding segment of the 5th Al Dhafra Grand Kingfish Championship is set to unfold from 11-13 April. This event, orchestrated by the Abu Dhabi Heritage Authority, will grace the shores of Al Mugheirah City in Al Dhafra, Abu Dhabi, marking a significant moment in the region's cultural and sporting calendar.
The championship is more than a competition; it's a concerted effort to regulate kingfish fishing activities within national legal frameworks, mitigate overfishing risks, and celebrate the UAE's rich sea heritage. It aims to rekindle local maritime traditions, display Al Dhafra's coastal allure, and encourage traditional fishing practices among both men and women enthusiasts.
With a focus on promoting fishing as a popular hobby and reviving competitive zeal among participants, the event also strives to ensure broad-based participation and establish itself as a key fixture in the seasonal calendar. The championship is set to award 20 prizes across male and female categories, with significant cash rewards for top finishers.
The distribution of awards is a highlight, with the first-place winners in both categories taking home AED120,000 each. The second-place finishers will receive AED80,000, while those in third place will be awarded AED60,000. Additional prizes will be distributed among other finalists, ensuring a wide recognition of participants' efforts and skills.
This year introduces an exciting addition - the Champion of the Season award. This accolade is based on cumulative points across three stages: Al-Sila’, Al Mugheirah, and the Al Dhafra finale. The male and female champions will receive a Nissan Patrol and a Rabdan car, respectively, adding an extra layer of anticipation and competition.
The organising committee has outlined specific rules for the competition to ensure fairness and sustainability. Trolling with hooks and a winch is identified as the sole permissible fishing technique. The use of nets, spearguns, or any other methods is strictly forbidden, underscoring the event's commitment to traditional fishing practices.
Open to citizens, residents, and visitors alike, the championship invites participants from across the country to partake in this cherished tradition. Interested individuals are encouraged to register on the official competition website and adhere to all security and safety regulations mandated by local authorities.
Competitors must also install an ePassport security device on their boats and submit a video of their catch. Notably, catches must meet minimum weight requirements—15kg for men and 8kg for women—to qualify.
For more details about participation guidelines and updates on the event, enthusiasts are directed to Abu Dhabi Heritage Authority's social media platform Turathuna. This platform serves as a hub for information dissemination and community engagement surrounding the championship.
The 5th Al Dhafra Grand Kingfish Championship not only celebrates the sport of fishing but also serves as a testament to Abu Dhabi's dedication to preserving its maritime heritage while fostering a sustainable future for its natural resources.
