Al-Baha Celebrates The Majestic Juniper: Conservation And Beauty Intertwined

Nestled amidst the mountains of southwestern Saudi Arabia, Al-Baha region stands as a testament to the country's rich natural heritage, highlighted by the presence of the majestic juniper trees. These evergreens, known for their vibrant green hues, have become even more pronounced following recent heavy rains, setting a picturesque landscape ready to captivate summer visitors in search of tranquility. Muhammed bin Saeed Al-Qudwa, speaking with an SPA reporter, highlighted the juniper's significance, noting that they constitute approximately 30% of the region's wild flora.

The National Center for Vegetation Cover Development and Combating Desertification in Al-Baha is at the forefront of efforts to protect these forests. Al-Qudwa pointed out that their work is not limited to junipers but also includes tamarisk and acacia varieties. These initiatives are part of Saudi Arabia's Vision 2030, aiming to preserve the nation's unique plant diversity for its aesthetic value and economic importance, especially concerning medicinal and aromatic plants.

Al-Baha's Majestic Juniper Trees

The center's comprehensive national action plan encompasses afforestation projects, tree-care programs, and seed collection and dispersal activities. These are conducted in collaboration with various sectors to ensure the protection of these vital ecosystems. Rangers are deployed to monitor vegetation and prevent illegal activities such as tree cutting or logging, with strict penalties enforced for violations.

Moreover, there is a strong emphasis on raising public awareness about the importance of being responsible stewards of Al-Baha's natural beauty. This year's rainfall has rejuvenated the junipers, enhancing their appeal and contributing significantly to soil conservation, protection of waterfalls, and rainwater runoff systems. Their ecological benefits extend beyond aesthetics, playing a crucial role in the region's tourist appeal.

Al-Baha's dedication to preserving its natural treasures has been further demonstrated by the opening of over 30 forests earlier this year. This move aligns with a noticeable increase in visitors, attracted by the moderate climate and stunning scenery enhanced by recent rains. Local authorities are also enhancing parks, gardens, and heritage villages to offer an enriching experience for tourists. These efforts underscore Al-Baha's position as a leading destination for nature lovers.
