Al Ahly Crowned African Champions For The 12th Time After Victory Over Esperance
Egyptian football club Al Ahly has once again asserted its dominance in African club football by clinching the TotalEnergies CAF Champions League title. The team secured a 1-0 victory over Tunisia’s Esperance Sportive de Tunis at Cairo International Stadium on Saturday evening. This triumph marks Al Ahly's 12th TotalEnergies CAF Champions League title and their fourth consecutive win in the competition, solidifying their status as the leading club in African football.
The decisive goal came early in the match, courtesy of an own goal by Esperance defender Roger Aholou. In the 4th minute, a header by Ramy Rabei'a deflected off Aholou's leg, beating young goalkeeper Amenallah Memmiche. The match was played at a high tempo, with both teams displaying strong attacking and defensive efforts throughout the encounter.

Esperance had a notable opportunity to equalise in the 52nd minute when TKA’s low drive narrowly missed the target. The Tunisian side continued to press for an equaliser, with Brazilian players Yan Sasse and Rodrigo Silva creating a chance that saw Sasse's curling shot go just wide of the goal.
Al Ahly nearly doubled their lead when Emam Ashour dribbled past two defenders and unleashed a powerful strike, which was saved by the Esperance goalkeeper. Later in the match, Afsha, who came on as a substitute, almost scored with a free kick that hit the bar in the 87th minute.
The match concluded with Al Ahly securing a 1-0 victory, much to the delight of their home fans at Cairo International Stadium. This win also extends Al Ahly's unbeaten run in the TotalEnergies CAF Champions League to 20 matches.
Historical Context
Al Ahly's latest triumph further cements their legacy in African club football. The Egyptian giants have now won the continent's most prestigious club competition 12 times, with their recent success marking four consecutive titles. This achievement underscores their consistent performance and dominance in African football.
Esperance's Struggle
For Esperance Sportive de Tunis, the search for their fifth TotalEnergies CAF Champions League title continues. The Tunisian club last won the competition in 2019 and has been striving to add another title to their collection since then. Despite their efforts and several close chances during the match, they were unable to overcome Al Ahly's solid defence and early lead.
The match was a testament to the high level of competition in African club football, with both teams showcasing skill and determination. However, it was Al Ahly who emerged victorious, reaffirming their position as Africa's top football club.
