Ajman University Receives ICANN Grant To Develop Innovative Global Internet Security System
Ajman University has achieved a significant milestone by securing an international grant of US$410,300 from the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN). This funding will support the creation of a pioneering system to archive and analyse global data related to Domain Name System Security Extensions (DNSSEC), a crucial cybersecurity protocol that protects Internet infrastructure.
The project aims to develop a platform that operates around the clock, analysing historical DNSSEC data. It will identify vulnerabilities and highlight gaps in its global implementation. This innovative system will provide diagnostic tools with visual analysis, aiding in the worldwide adoption of DNSSEC. Ajman University is the only institution in the Middle East to receive this grant, standing out among 247 global applicants.

Ajman University is one of just 23 entities selected globally, including three from Asia. Among these, AU is one of only five universities worldwide to receive the award. This achievement underscores AU's ability to compete internationally in fields like cybersecurity and Internet governance. The grant also enhances AU’s status as a U.S.-equivalent charitable organisation, opening doors for further international funding.
Research and Technological Advancements
The project will significantly boost AU’s research infrastructure by developing a passive system to collect and analyse DNSSEC data. This initiative will increase AU’s visibility as the global Internet community begins using the platform. Additionally, a high-tech hardware lab will be established on campus, enhancing AU’s capacity for applied research in digital infrastructure.
Opportunities for Students and Researchers
This initiative promises to create research and training opportunities for AU graduates while providing current students access to valuable datasets. These resources will support their growth in analytical and technical skills. The project addresses a major challenge related to DNSSEC implementation, which lacks visibility into global adoption and implementation gaps.
Ajman University aims to bridge this gap by monitoring DNSSEC adoption across Internet domain names worldwide. This effort reflects AU’s commitment to leveraging scientific research for global challenges, highlighting its role in building secure digital infrastructure that benefits both local and global communities.
