Global Air Traffic Rebounds To Surpass Pre-Pandemic Figures, ICAO Confirms
The International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) has recently shared its projections for the aviation industry, highlighting a positive outlook for passenger air traffic in the first quarter of 2024. According to ICAO, air traffic levels are expected to surpass those of 2019 by approximately 2 percent, with a potential increase to 4 percent if recovery accelerates in certain routes. This optimistic forecast is based on a Compound Annual Growth Rate (CAGR) of about 0.5 percent from 2019 to 2024.
ICAO Council President Salvatore Sciacchitano emphasized the pivotal role of member states in aligning their pandemic responses with ICAO's guidance, which has significantly contributed to the recovery of air services. The continued implementation of post-pandemic guidance is deemed essential for ensuring the resilience and sustainability of this recovery phase.

However, the forecast for global demand in Freight Tonne-Kilometres (FTK) for 2024 presents a slight decline, expected to be around 2 percent below 2019 levels. This anticipated decrease is attributed to the overall economic weakness worldwide, reflecting challenges in sustaining cargo traffic growth.
On a brighter note, ICAO Secretary General Juan Carlos Salazar highlighted the global aviation community's commitment to environmental sustainability. Governments' aspirational goals for decarbonising air transport by 2050, alongside ICAO-led initiatives, are driving the development and implementation of cleaner aviation technologies and operational improvements. The focus on sustainable aviation fuels is particularly crucial for meeting these environmental objectives.
ICAO's analysis also sheds light on the aviation sector's performance in 2023, revealing that air traffic on most routes had either reached or exceeded pre-pandemic levels by year-end. This near-complete recovery aligns with ICAO's predictions, underscoring the resilience of passenger air traffic amidst ongoing challenges.
Significantly, regions such as Intra-Europe; Europe to/from North America, Middle East, South West Asia, and Africa; North America to/from Latin America and the Caribbean, South West Asia, South East Asia, and Pacific; and Middle East to/from South West Asia and Africa have all surpassed their 2019 traffic levels. In contrast, most international Asian routes continue to experience reduced traffic compared to pre-pandemic figures.
Despite facing high fuel prices and economic uncertainties, the airline industry managed to achieve an estimated total operating profit of USD 39 billion in 2023, mirroring the profit levels of 2019. This financial success is attributed to increased passenger yields and productivity gains within the sector. Notably, airlines in North America and Europe accounted for the majority of these profits.
