AI's Impact On Journalism And Media Transformation Discussed At GMC 2024
The Global Media Congress 2024 began with a session titled "AI-Powered Newsrooms: Redefining the Future of Journalism." Participants discussed how artificial intelligence (AI) is reshaping media and journalism. The focus was on AI's role in automation, content creation, and editorial processes, alongside ethical considerations. The session highlighted AI's potential to improve efficiency and accuracy while streamlining newsroom workflows.
However, challenges such as maintaining journalistic integrity and ensuring unbiased reporting were also addressed. The discussion underscored the need for responsible AI adoption to balance innovation with journalism's core values. This ensures that technology enhances rather than undermines media credibility and trustworthiness.

Yaser Bishr, Advisor to the Chairman at MONIIFY, explained AI's transformative capabilities in newsrooms. He stated, "AI has provided us with immense capabilities, surpassing human potential in some areas. It is anticipated that within the next ten years, we will achieve a fully integrated platform powered by AI tools." Bishr outlined five stages of AI development, from tool interaction to full task automation.
Bishr also noted a significant bias in AI-generated content due to the limited presence of Arabic content online. This often results in outputs reflecting Western culture more prominently. Addressing this disparity is crucial for balanced global representation in AI-driven journalism.
Ahmed Al Alawi, Editor-in-Chief of Al Ain News, shared insights on how AI has revolutionised journalistic tools and content delivery. He said, "AI has transformed our understanding of journalistic tools, mechanisms, and content delivery." At Al Ain News, AI enhances workflows by automating content generation and translation, leading to increased output and accuracy.
Al Alawi emphasised that while AI accelerates production and reduces costs, editorial decisions must remain human-centric. The human element is vital for maintaining objectivity and ethics in publishing. Responsible investment in AI is essential to reshape journalistic practices without compromising ethical standards.
Empowering Media Professionals
Ahmed S. Aboushabab from IMI highlighted how AI empowers media professionals to achieve previously unattainable tasks. He remarked, "AI has empowered media professionals to undertake tasks that were previously unachievable." Viewing AI as a companion supports creative ideas and innovation within the industry.
The session was moderated by Yousef Al Hooti from Oman Media and included key figures like Ahmed Al Alawi and Ahmed S. Aboushabab. Their insights collectively emphasised the importance of integrating AI responsibly into journalism while preserving its foundational values.
The discussions at the Global Media Congress 2024 highlighted both opportunities and challenges presented by AI in journalism. As technology continues to evolve, it remains crucial for media professionals to harness its potential responsibly while safeguarding journalistic integrity and ethics.
