AI's Role In Regulatory Systems Discussed At TRENDS Symposium On Security And Ethics

A symposium titled "The Role of AI in Security: Balancing Technological Limits and Human Responsibility" was hosted by TRENDS Research and Advisory at their virtual office in Germany. This event coincided with their participation in the 77th Frankfurt International Book Fair 2025. Experts from various fields, including security, defence, intelligence, and counterterrorism, gathered to discuss AI's impact on global security and the ethical responsibilities it entails.

Dr Mohammed Abdullah Al-Ali, CEO of TRENDS, opened the session by highlighting AI's crucial role in national and international security. He mentioned its applications in areas like counterterrorism, cybersecurity, surveillance, border control, and military strategy. However, he cautioned that AI's rapid spread brings risks such as system manipulation, algorithmic bias, privacy breaches, and overreliance on automation.

TRENDS Symposium Explores AI in Security

Yan St-Pierre, CEO of MOSECON, discussed AI’s dual nature in both combating and enabling terrorism. He pointed out that extremist groups use AI for propaganda, cyberattacks, and operational planning. St-Pierre emphasised the necessity of human oversight to prevent misuse and ensure accountability within these contexts.

Mustafa Al-Ammar from Germany’s Christian Democratic Union (CDU) highlighted threats like deepfakes and digital disinformation. He advocated for unified European standards in cyber defence and stronger collaboration among security entities to balance privacy with security effectively.

Dr Jassim Mohamed of the European Centre for Counterterrorism and Intelligence Studies (ECCI) noted that while AI speeds up data analysis and threat detection, it cannot replace human ethical reasoning. He called for stricter oversight, continuous training, and international legal frameworks to ensure AI aligns with democratic values.

The symposium concluded that although AI enhances security capabilities significantly, human responsibility remains vital. Transparency and ethical governance are essential to maintain stability and global trust. The discussions underscored the importance of balancing technological advancements with ethical considerations.
