AI’s Impact On Jobs: Former Austrian PM Kurz Shares Optimistic View
Sebastian Kurz, the former Chancellor of Austria, recently shared his insights on the future of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and its impact on employment during an interview with the Emirates News Agency (WAM) in Dubai. Kurz, who became the Chancellor at the age of 31 in 2017, making him one of the youngest ever democratically elected heads of government globally, expressed a fundamentally optimistic view on technological progress.
Despite common fears that AI might lead to mass unemployment, Kurz believes that such predictions might not entirely come to fruition. He acknowledged that while some jobs would inevitably be lost to AI, new roles would emerge, particularly noting that AI is likely to replace office jobs before affecting truck drivers and warehouse workers. This development, highlighted by the capabilities of chatbots like ChatGPT, has taken many by surprise.

Kurz also touched upon the potential risks associated with technological advancements, including cybersecurity threats and the spread of disinformation. He emphasized the importance of re-evaluating approaches to cybersecurity in a digital world without national borders. Drawing from his experiences with cyber-attacks during his tenure as Chancellor, Kurz co-founded Dream, a cybersecurity company leveraging AI to protect critical infrastructures.
The former chancellor expressed concerns over AI-generated disinformation and its global implications, likening it to other significant challenges such as climate change. He praised the UAE for its leadership in fostering international cooperation and dialogue, citing the World Government Summit in Dubai and COP28 as exemplary instances of global collaboration.
Kurz commended the UAE's successful hosting of COP28, highlighting it as evidence that diplomacy remains effective amidst geopolitical tensions. He lauded the UAE's innovative efforts in renewable energy, particularly in solar power and hydrogen strategies. The strategic partnership between Austria and the UAE was also a focal point of discussion, with Kurz emphasizing its importance in innovation, technology, and counter-terrorism efforts.
Throughout the interview, Kurz maintained an optimistic stance on technological progress while acknowledging the challenges and opportunities it presents. His reflections underscore a belief in the potential for positive impacts on humanity through innovation and international cooperation.
