Ahmed Bin Saeed Opens 11th World Green Economy Summit In Dubai With Focus On Innovation And Sustainability

The World Green Economy Summit (WGES) in Dubai was inaugurated by H.H. Sheikh Ahmed bin Saeed Al Maktoum under the patronage of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum. Organised by the Dubai Supreme Council of Energy, DEWA, and WGEO, this year's summit focuses on "Innovating for Impact: Accelerating the Future of the Green Economy." The event gathers over 100 global speakers to discuss climate action and sustainability.

In his opening remarks, Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer highlighted the UAE's leadership in global climate initiatives. He emphasised innovation as a key element in creating sustainable solutions to climate challenges. The summit aims to showcase how innovation and AI can help monitor emissions and predict climate risks while discussing IoT's role in resource efficiency and carbon reduction.

Al Tayer noted that clean energy is central to the new global economy. By 2030, AI is expected to contribute AED350 billion to the UAE's economy. The global green economy reached $7.9 trillion in early 2025, with projections indicating growth to $30 trillion by 2033. Investment in low-carbon energy rose by 11% in 2024, reflecting a shift towards renewable energy sources.

Dubai has been at the forefront of this transformation, with clean energy now comprising 21.5% of its energy mix. The Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Solar Park exemplifies Dubai's commitment to carbon neutrality by 2050. By 2030, it is expected to exceed its original capacity plans, significantly reducing carbon emissions.

Al Tayer explained that innovation extends beyond energy generation to storage solutions essential for grid stability. DEWA is advancing these developments through projects like the solar park's seventh phase, which will include a large battery storage system. This enhances grid flexibility and efficiency.

Sustainable finance is crucial for accelerating the transition to green energy. Green bonds and investments aligned with climate goals are growing globally. Climate adaptation requires resilient infrastructure capable of handling environmental changes, with youth playing a vital role in driving this transformation.

Youth Engagement and Global Cooperation

Youth are pivotal in shaping a sustainable future through innovation and start-ups focused on climate-friendly technologies. Institutions must empower young people to lead this change. The UAE leads this transformation through organisations like WGEO, which mobilises efforts for a low-carbon model globally.

This year saw the first Regional Green Economy Forum on carbon-neutral cities held in Morocco under King Mohammed VI's patronage. The forum focused on empowering African cities towards carbon neutrality through WGEO's Carbon Neutral Cities initiative.

Global Perspectives on Sustainability

Former Finnish President Sauli Niinistö shared Finland's journey towards sustainability, emphasising that ambitious goals drive competitiveness rather than hinder it. He stressed that global cooperation is essential for advancing the green economy agenda.

Niinistö stated: "We should approach the transition to a green economy as an investment in our shared future." He called for partnerships between governments, private sectors, and civil society to guide open markets with clear rules and frameworks.

UAE’s Vision for Sustainability

Dr Amna bint Abdullah Al Dahak highlighted the UAE’s Net Zero 2050 Strategy as a comprehensive plan for decarbonisation while fostering economic growth. Initiatives include building large solar plants and converting waste into clean power through projects like Warsan Waste-to-Energy Plant.

The UAE’s approach involves grassroots community action alongside global efforts to promote sustainable practices locally while nurturing future climate leaders.

The Role of Social Media

Sheikha Dr Shamma bint Mohammed bin Khalid Al Nahyan discussed social media’s role in addressing climate challenges globally during her speech titled ‘Tweeting for Change’. She noted increased interest among Arab youths in climate issues from 11% in 2008 to 68% recently.

Mangrove forests symbolise harmony between humans and nature; Emirati volunteers have actively participated in afforestation campaigns showcasing their commitment via social media platforms.

WGES serves as an integrated platform bringing together government representatives, private sector leaders, technology pioneers, and civil society members worldwide. It facilitates dialogue on practical solutions addressing environmental challenges while exploring inclusive green growth opportunities.
