Sandalwood And Aloeswood Cultivation In Najran Aims To Boost Local Economy And Sustainability
An agricultural initiative in Najran is focusing on growing sandalwood and aloeswood. This effort is part of the Jazan Mountainous Development Authority's third-phase project across Saudi Arabia. Around 200 seedlings have been planted on three farms in the region. This project aligns with the Kingdom Vision 2030 goals, aiming to enhance the local economy and promote sustainable development.
Ali Al-Harith, Chairman of the Agricultural Committee at the Najran Chamber, explained that Najran's inclusion in the national sandalwood cultivation map supports economic diversification. The region's moderate climate, fertile soil, and abundant water resources are expected to contribute significantly to this project's success. These conditions have previously supported crops like rice, sesame, and coffee.

Al-Harith highlighted sandalwood's economic, environmental, and cultural importance. He noted its deep roots in Saudi heritage and its use in celebrations. Sandalwood is not only economically valuable but also holds aromatic significance. It offers potential for income diversification through its various applications.
Farmer Qasila Al Hamam has been nurturing 60 seedlings for six months in Rir. She mentioned that while sandalwood and aloeswood need special care, they are valuable for producing fragrances and natural oils. These products have a strong market both locally and internationally, especially in the perfume and cosmetics industries.
The cultivation of these trees presents new investment opportunities. It strengthens the national economy by supporting sustainable development initiatives. Additionally, it helps preserve environmental heritage for future generations. The project aims to raise awareness about the agricultural benefits of these trees.
Al-Harith emphasized the need for collaborative efforts to educate people on proper tree care. By doing so, they can maximize the benefits of sandalwood cultivation. This initiative not only supports economic growth but also contributes to preserving cultural traditions associated with these valuable trees.
This agricultural experiment reflects optimism for future success in Najran's farming sector. By aligning with Vision 2030 goals, it seeks to create a more diversified economy while maintaining environmental sustainability.
