Afforestation Technologies Exhibition Opens At COP16 In Riyadh, Showcasing Sustainable Development Efforts
The second annual International Exhibition and Forum for Afforestation Technologies commenced in Riyadh, hosted by the National Center for Vegetation Cover Development and Combating Desertification (NCVC). Dr. Khaled bin Abdullah Al-Abdulkader, NCVC's Chief Executive, highlighted Saudi Arabia's dedication to sustainable development under its leadership's vision, aligning with Saudi Vision 2030. The event coincides with the COP16 conference, a major international environmental gathering.
Dr. Al-Abdulkader noted that this year's conference is unprecedented in scale, featuring representatives from 197 countries, 1,000 speakers, and 300 exhibitors. Additionally, it includes various environmental forums. A significant addition is the "Green Zone," introduced for the first time to engage the public through exhibitions by government bodies, companies, local environmental groups, and cultural activities.

The Kingdom has made notable progress in environmental protection and desertification control. Initiatives like the Saudi Green Initiative aim to plant 10 billion trees across Saudi Arabia and rehabilitate 40 million hectares of degraded land. With partners, over 100 million trees have been planted so far, restoring 250,000 hectares.
The International Forum on Afforestation Technologies serves as a platform for exchanging expertise among specialists and decision-makers. It fosters collaboration and understanding while facilitating the convergence of diverse environmental cultures. This forum also opens broad economic and knowledge horizons for achieving the Saudi Green Initiative's objectives.
The forum addresses 11 key themes including pioneering initiatives in afforestation and vegetation cover development. Other topics include sustainable water management in afforestation projects, modern technologies in afforestation monitoring and management, green belts, urban infrastructure afforestation, combating desertification, and evaluating environmental returns on investment.
Dr. Al-Abdulkader emphasized that Saudi Arabia is setting an example globally by enhancing quality of life locally and internationally through these initiatives. The forum's sessions are designed to provide insights into these critical areas of focus.
This event underscores Saudi Arabia's leadership role in addressing global environmental challenges such as sustainable development and land degradation. By hosting such a significant gathering alongside COP16, the Kingdom demonstrates its commitment to these pressing issues.
