ADNOC Advances Toward 10 Million Mangroves By 2030 After Planting Five Millionth

ADNOC has passed the midway point in its plan to plant 10 million mangroves by 2030, after Dr. Sultan Ahmed Al Jaber planted the company’s five millionth seedling at the Al Nouf mangrove forest in Abu Dhabi, reinforcing the UAE’s wider objective of planting 100 million mangroves by the end of the decade.

Community participation has become a major feature of ADNOC’s efforts. In 2025 alone, more than 1,000 volunteers are recorded as taking part in mangrove planting sessions, giving thousands of hours to restoration work, with a total of about 6,000 participants involved in planting, coastal clean-ups and biodiversity projects in Abu Dhabi since the programme began.

ADNOC hits halfway mangrove target

Those taking part in ADNOC’s mangrove planting programme include students, youth groups, community organisations, People of Determination and ADNOC employees, who support activities across different stages, from planting through to site maintenance, reflecting growing awareness of coastal protection and long-term environmental stewardship within the UAE.

ADNOC launched its dedicated mangrove planting programme in 2023, using artificial intelligence-enabled drones designed in the UAE to disperse seeds over large coastal areas, while advanced monitoring tools, including machine learning systems, are deployed to observe mangrove growth, measure survival rates and assess ecosystem recovery over extended periods.

In 2024, ADNOC joined the Abu Dhabi Mangrove Initiative, led by the Environment Agency – Abu Dhabi, to help speed up restoration, support scientific research and widen private sector and public involvement, aligning its work with the UAE’s Plant the Emirates Program and the World Economic Forum’s One Trillion Trees Initiative.

Dr. Al Jaber said, "Environmental stewardship is central to ADNOC’s strategy and underpins our commitment to creating sustainable long-term value for the UAE and the communities in which we operate. We have made excellent progress towards our target to plant 10 million mangroves by 2030 by leveraging advanced technologies to support biodiversity and responsibly provide the energy that people and economies need to thrive."

By crossing the five million mangrove milestone and linking technology, partnerships and public engagement, ADNOC is contributing to national climate and biodiversity goals, while the ongoing programme is expected to expand further across Abu Dhabi’s coasts as the 2030 planting targets approach.
