Soon, A Robotic Arm Will Refuel Vehicles In UAE

UAE residents are about to experience a futuristic enhancement in their daily lives, particularly when it comes to refuelling their vehicles. The Abu Dhabi National Oil Company (ADNOC) has introduced an innovative robotic arm designed to automate the process of refuelling at petrol stations. This advanced technology aims to streamline the refuelling process, making it quicker and more efficient for drivers.

Revolutionizing Fuel Service With Robotic Technology

The robotic arm represents a significant leap in refuelling technology, equipped to handle the entire process from opening the car's petrol flap to unscrewing the cap and pumping the fuel. It leverages artificial intelligence to personalize the fuelling experience based on individual habits, facilitated through a mobile app that allows users to specify the exact amount of fuel they need. This marks a move towards greater convenience, eliminating the need for drivers to leave their cars or interact with service station attendants.

Currently, a pilot scheme is underway at Reef Island in Abu Dhabi to gather operational data. This is a precursor to the robotic arm's anticipated full deployment across ADNOC's service stations in the UAE by the end of the year. This initiative is part of ADNOC's five-year strategy to enhance customer service and operational efficiency at its fuel stations.

How Does It Work?

The process begins when a vehicle arrives at the station, where the driver can choose the type of fuel via a touchscreen interface at the pump or through a smartphone app. The robotic arm, equipped with a fuel-specific nozzle, extends towards the vehicle, with sensors and cameras ensuring accurate alignment with the fuel tank opening. Once positioned, the arm inserts the nozzle and commences refuelling to the specified amount. Continuous monitoring by sensors and cameras guarantees the safety and efficiency of the process. Upon completion, the driver is notified, allowing them to resume their journey promptly.

This automated service is set to exist alongside traditional refuelling methods, where station employees assist customers. The introduction of robotic refuelling aims to not only expedite the service but also enhance the working conditions of station attendants by reducing their exposure to harsh outdoor conditions. Additionally, this technology is expected to improve overall service quality and station capacity, leading to better traffic flow within and around the service areas.

ADNOC's move towards integrating advanced technologies within its operations reflects a broader trend of automation across various sectors. By adopting such innovations, the company not only aims to improve customer convenience and operational efficiency but also sets a new standard for service station operations in the UAE and potentially beyond.
