ADNOC Gas Partners With Baker Hughes To Transform Methane Into Graphene And Hydrogen Using LOOP Technology

ADNOC Gas plc, in collaboration with Baker Hughes, has successfully implemented Levidian's LOOP technology at the Habshan Gas Processing Plant. This marks the first time this British climate technology is used at a gas processing facility. The LOOP system captures carbon from methane, a key component of natural gas, and converts it into graphene. This material is expected to revolutionise various industrial applications.

The LOOP unit can produce over 1 tonne per annum (tpa) of graphene and 1 tpa of hydrogen. This dual-purpose innovation aligns with global energy transition goals. Future installations are projected to yield 15 tpa. Mohamed Al Hashemi, Chief Operations Officer of ADNOC Gas, stated, "The deployment of LOOP technology is a significant milestone for ADNOC Gas. By transforming methane into valuable graphene and clean hydrogen, we are unlocking new value from natural gas, driving decarbonisation and supporting the UAE’s industrial growth and climate ambitions."

The graphene produced at the Habshan complex will be assessed by ADNOC’s Technology team for potential uses. Graphene could enhance electric vehicle batteries and solar panels or create stronger materials like concrete and polymer pipes. John Hartley, CEO of Levidian, noted the market's strong interest in their graphene. He expressed excitement about working with Baker Hughes and ADNOC to establish Levidian as a leading producer of high-quality graphene.

Data from this pilot project will help refine AI modelling and digital twins to reduce energy use while maximising graphene output in future installations. This is part of Levidian’s expanding fleet of LOOP units. Alessandro Bresciani, Senior Vice President Climate Technology Solutions at Baker Hughes, commented on the collaboration: "This project demonstrates once more how the collaboration between Baker Hughes and ADNOC Gas unlocks the potential of new decarbonisation technologies."

Bresciani also highlighted the importance of technical skills and collaboration in bringing innovations from startups to complex industrial sites while maintaining health, safety, and environmental standards. He added that they are pleased to have integrated Levidian's technology into ADNOC Gas’ Habshan plant as part of their long-term focus on scaling up innovative solutions for customers.

This initiative reflects ADNOC Gas' commitment to a sustainable energy future while providing tangible benefits for industries served by them. The project not only supports decarbonisation but also aligns with UAE’s climate goals by converting methane into valuable resources like graphene and hydrogen.

The successful installation at Habshan signifies a major step forward in utilising advanced technologies for environmental sustainability. As these efforts continue to evolve, they promise significant contributions towards reducing carbon emissions globally.
