ADNOC's ALDI Programme Empowers Emirati Legal Talent For Global Standards

ADNOC is advancing Emirati legal talent through the ADNOC Legal Development Institute (ALDI). This initiative, launched in January 2024, aims to provide top-tier legal education and practical experience. The programme aligns with ADNOC's strategy to support a knowledge-based economy in the UAE by nurturing exceptional UAE National talent through various educational initiatives.

The demand for skilled legal professionals is increasing as the UAE strengthens its role as a global business hub. ALDI addresses this need by offering a comprehensive legal education that meets international standards. "In line with the vision of the UAE leadership and under the guidance of Dr. Sultan Ahmed Al Jaber, Minister of Industry and Advanced Technology and ADNOC's Managing Director and GCEO, ADNOC continues to nurture and empower Emirati talent to drive the nation's growth and prosperity," said Marwan Naim Nijmeh, ADNOC's Chief Legal Officer.

Empowering Emirati Legal Talent at ADNOC

Nijmeh further stated, "ALDI supports these efforts and is providing an important platform to develop the next generation of Emirati legal professionals. Fundamentally, our people remain our most valuable asset and we will continue to prioritise their development." The programme invites both recent graduates and seasoned professionals, allowing them to pursue esteemed certifications like the UK Solicitors Qualifying Examination (SQE) and the New York Bar Exam.

Currently, eight UAE Nationals are enrolled in ALDI. Among them, five high-achieving Emirati students are working towards their SQE qualifications at Abu Dhabi Global Market (ADGM) Academy. ALDI's curriculum covers essential UAE and English law topics while also focusing on practical skills such as contract drafting, negotiation, and legal planning.

ADNOC has designed the curriculum to ensure participants not only excel in technical law aspects but also acquire commercial insight needed for success in one of the world's largest companies' legal teams. Cohort members gain international exposure, enhancing their legal skills for global excellence.

Upon completing their placements, participants return to ADNOC as fully qualified legal counsel. By 2027, ADNOC expects its first cohort of dual-qualified lawyers to rejoin the company, prepared to handle complex international legal frameworks.

Building a Strong Legal Foundation

Beyond enhancing ADNOC's internal legal capabilities, ALDI contributes significantly to the broader UAE legal landscape. By developing highly skilled Emirati lawyers, it enriches the local talent pool and reduces dependence on foreign legal professionals.

"This programme is not just about legal education; it's about building the UAE's legal future," said ALDI cohort member Mariam Al Ameri. "It's empowering to know that I'm part of a programme that's shaping the next generation of legal experts in the UAE."

Nurturing Young Talent

ALDI actively engages with schools and universities across the country through academic roadshows and partnerships. This approach helps identify promising young talent early on, ensuring a robust pipeline of Emirati talent for years ahead.

The initiative not only strengthens ADNOC’s internal expertise but also plays a crucial role in shaping a new generation of Emirati lawyers equipped with world-class qualifications and experience.
