ADFD Receives Abdul Latif Al Hamad Award For Bahrain International Airport Expansion Project
The Abu Dhabi Fund for Development (ADFD) has received the Abdul Latif Yousef Al Hamad Development Award for the Best Development Project in the Arab World 2024. This recognition is for its contribution to the expansion and modernisation of Bahrain International Airport. The award was presented at the 2025 Joint Annual Meetings of Arab Financial Institutions in Kuwait.
Since its inauguration in 2014, Bahrain International Airport has become a symbol of innovation and cultural pride. It combines Bahrain’s heritage with advanced infrastructure, enhancing its status as a global travel and trade hub. The airport offers top-notch security, efficiency, and passenger services, reinforcing Bahrain's international standing.

The collaboration between ADFD and Bahrain's government began in 1974, focusing on sustainable development goals. The airport project, funded with AED3.7 billion (US$1 billion) by ADFD, is part of the UAE’s larger AED9.2 billion (US$2.5 billion) contribution to Bahrain under the GCC Development Program initiated in 2013.
Bahrain International Airport plays a crucial role in the Kingdom’s economy by driving tourism, trade, and investment. It streamlines import/export operations to support local industries. The airport also enhances quality of life by promoting cultural exchange and global connectivity, linking Bahrain with the world.
Mohamed Saif Al Suwaidi, Director-General of ADFD, stated that this award celebrates over five decades of UAE-Bahrain partnership. He noted that it reflects their commitment to achieving development goals through transformative projects across critical sectors.
Bader Al Saad from the Arab Fund for Economic and Social Development highlighted that the Abdullatif Al-Hamad Award aims to showcase Arab development efforts. It encourages investment in economic and social projects supported by the Arab Coordination Group.
Future Prospects and Infrastructure Development
Mohamed Yousif Al Binfalah, CEO of Bahrain Airport Company, expressed pride in this recognition. He said it marks the success of Bahrain’s strategic vision to develop vital infrastructure through careful planning and execution by Bahraini talent.
The airport project has significantly impacted Bahrain’s economy by strengthening its strategic position in international air transport. It increased passenger traffic and airline use while helping secure US$250 million for the operating company by 2024.
Sustainable Growth and Youth Opportunities
The development model exemplifies how combining national will with regional support accelerates sustainable growth. This honour goes beyond urban achievement; it reflects national success based on a clear vision prioritising infrastructure development.
Bahrain Airport Company has seen significant revenue growth recently, contributing to non-oil revenues making up 86.4% of GDP in Q3 2024. The airport creates opportunities for Bahraini youth through specialised training programmes in aviation services.
This initiative equips young people with essential skills for future leadership roles while reinforcing Bahrain's competitiveness regionally and internationally.
