ADAFSA Issues Essential Guidelines For Farmers To Combat Weather Fluctuations

In response to the forecasted storms, winds, and rainy weather, the Abu Dhabi Agriculture and Food Safety Authority (ADAFSA) has issued a series of recommendations for farmers and livestock breeders. These guidelines are designed to mitigate the potential risks posed by weather fluctuations to farms, barns, workers, and winter crops, including vegetables and date palm trees.

ADAFSA has emphasized the importance of ensuring the safety of water drainage tools on farms to facilitate proper rainwater drainage without harming crops. Additionally, the authority has advised on the necessity of inspecting electrical installations by a specialized technician to prevent any electrical hazards or power outages caused by adverse weather conditions.

ADAFSA's Weather Safety Tips for Farmers

For livestock breeders, ADAFSA recommends keeping animals in shelters during inclement weather to protect them from wind and rain. The authority also advises providing clean drinking water to prevent livestock from consuming potentially contaminated rainwater. Monitoring the general health of barn animals is crucial, and farmers are urged to seek veterinary consultation if any health concerns arise.

Feed and Equipment Safety

To protect feed stocks from moisture and rain, ADAFSA suggests storing feed in tightly closed facilities and covering them adequately. It is also recommended to elevate feed on wooden or alternative platforms to safeguard against moisture. In instances where feed is exposed to rainwater, separating and drying the affected feed is advisable to prevent damage to the remaining stock.

Farmers are also cautioned against leaving movable tools and equipment in areas susceptible to wind, which could lead to potential damage to crops or structures. Regular checks for broken branches in farm trees are recommended to prevent them from causing damage during strong winds.

Guidance for Protected Structures

For those with protected structures on their farms, operating fans to reduce internal pressure and running water on cooling panels can minimize dust entry. Ensuring the structural integrity of iron frameworks and plastic covers is vital, as is checking electrical systems and ensuring backup generators are operational. ADAFSA also advises keeping water drains at the edges of protected structures clear to prevent water ingress.

In light of high humidity, low temperatures, or following rainfall, ADAFSA underscores the importance of preventive crop spraying with general fungicides to lessen the risk of fungal diseases affecting crops.

Technical Assistance

Farmers and livestock owners in need of technical support are encouraged to consult agricultural guidance centres or veterinary clinics. These facilities offer specialized technical guidance and advice across various regions of Abu Dhabi Emirate, aiming to protect plants and livestock from climate change impacts and prevent damage to agricultural crops or harm to livestock.

By adhering to these guidelines, farmers and livestock breeders can take proactive steps towards safeguarding their livelihoods against the unpredictable nature of weather fluctuations.
