ADAFSA And ADQCC Launch Professional Training Programme To Enhance Agricultural Workforce Capacity
The Abu Dhabi Agriculture and Food Safety Authority (ADAFSA), in partnership with the Abu Dhabi Quality and Conformity Council (ADQCC), has introduced a Professional Training Programme. This initiative aims to boost the agricultural sector's efficiency and ensure sustainable food production in Abu Dhabi. The programme targets farmers, livestock breeders, and agricultural workers, focusing on plant farms and livestock holdings.
The programme is part of a larger development strategy aimed at transitioning the agricultural sector to a more professional and knowledge-based model. It seeks to enhance technical and professional skills in both plant and animal production by establishing clear occupational standards. Specialised training modules are designed to promote unified agricultural practices, improve operational quality, and elevate professionalism in farm management.

Dr Tariq Ahmed Al Amri, Acting Director-General of ADAFSA, stated: "The Professional Training Programme for farmers and livestock breeders represents a significant step forward in developing Abu Dhabi’s agricultural sector. It reflects our commitment to building a knowledge-driven, innovation-led production environment. Today, it has become essential to move from traditional farming practices to a professional model based on qualified expertise and sound agricultural methods — an objective we are realising through our partnership with the Abu Dhabi Quality and Conformity Council."
He further emphasised that human capital development is crucial for successful transformation. The programme includes various critical agricultural professions such as livestock, poultry, aquaculture workers, farm supervisors, and crop production specialists. It focuses on hands-on training and vocational qualification to directly enhance production quality and operational efficiency.
Dr Al Amri also mentioned: "The programme goes beyond training; it also involves the establishment of clear professional standards, awareness-raising among workers, and the promotion of compliance with best practices. These measures ensure alignment with both local and international benchmarks and strengthen the competitiveness of Abu Dhabi’s agricultural and food products."
The programme was launched during Global Food Week's second edition, highlighting ADAFSA's dedication to advancing national priorities in food security and sustainability. It underscores ADAFSA’s role as the local authority responsible for agriculture, food safety, and biosecurity in Abu Dhabi.
Collaborative Efforts for Sector Improvement
A comprehensive field survey by ADAFSA informed the programme's design. This survey assessed farm workers' knowledge and skills, revealing a need to bolster technical capabilities through practical training aligned with future demands. The initiative aims to address challenges like climate change and resource constraints.
The Sustainable Agricultural Development Plan underpins this programme, implemented with support from the Food and Agriculture Organisation of the United Nations (FAO). The plan leverages technology to boost productivity while reducing resource waste. It also strengthens agriculture's contribution to the national economy.
Engaging Stakeholders for Broader Impact
A diverse range of government bodies and private entities are involved in this initiative. Participants include the Department of Economic Development, Abu Dhabi Public Health Centre, Al Foah, SILAL, commercial farms, and small-scale producers. This collaboration highlights the programme's participatory nature in building an integrated agricultural ecosystem.
The initiative is expected to improve performance indicators across farms by raising workers’ knowledge levels. It aims to prepare the sector for future challenges such as climate change, resource scarcity, and evolving global market dynamics.
Dr Al Amri concluded: "At ADAFSA, we are guided by a comprehensive vision that places people at the heart of development. Through this programme, we aim to empower farmers and livestock breeders with the knowledge and tools necessary to be active partners in achieving food security, advancing sustainability, and building a more resilient and efficient agricultural future."
