AD Ports Group Conducts First Ship-to-Ship LNG Bunkering Operation At Khalifa Port
AD Ports Group has successfully conducted its inaugural ship-to-ship (STS) liquified natural gas (LNG) bunkering operation at Khalifa Port. This event underscores Abu Dhabi's growing role as a central hub for sustainable maritime solutions and alternative marine fuels. The operation involved the container vessel MSC Thais, which received LNG fuel from the Green Zeebrugge, a dedicated LNG bunker vessel supplied by Monjasa.
The STS bunkering operation was part of a simultaneous process where both LNG and cargo were transferred concurrently. This highlights AD Ports Group's capability to integrate complex services efficiently within its port infrastructure. By facilitating access to lower-carbon fuels, the group supports both industry needs and global environmental goals.

Liquified natural gas is known for reducing greenhouse gas emissions significantly. It also emits less sulphur oxide, nitrogen oxide, and particulate matter compared to traditional marine fuels. This makes it a cleaner alternative that aligns with global sustainability efforts.
AD Ports Group plans to expand LNG bunkering services across its commercial ports in Abu Dhabi. This includes servicing cruise vessels at Zayed Port. The group offers a comprehensive fuel portfolio that includes Very Low Sulphur Fuel Oil (VLSFO), Marine Gas Oil (MGO), and High-Sulfur Fuel Oil (HSFO).
The recent STS operation adhered strictly to international best practices and regulatory standards. These include protocols set by organisations such as the International Maritime Organisation (IMO) and the International Association of Ports and Harbors (IAPH). Compliance with these guidelines ensures safe and efficient operations.
Global Energy Transition
Captain Saif Al Mheiri, CEO of Abu Dhabi Maritime and Chief Sustainability Officer at AD Ports Group, stated, "By adhering to the highest safety and environmental standards, AD Ports Group and Monjasa are ensuring that shipowners have reliable access to a diversified fuel mix that supports their decarbonisation objectives. AD Ports Group will continue to explore and implement forward-looking solutions that drive progress toward global sustainability goals."
This achievement marks a significant step in accelerating the shift towards sustainable marine fuels. It reinforces Abu Dhabi’s leadership in the global energy transition while advancing the UAE’s Net Zero 2050 Strategy.
