KFSHRC Leads In Robotic Organ Transplantation With 1,092 Successful Procedures In One Year

King Faisal Specialist Hospital and Research Centre (KFSHRC) in Saudi Arabia has made significant strides in organ transplantation. The hospital's Organ Transplant Centre of Excellence (OTCoE) is renowned for its expertise in solid organ transplants, including liver, kidney, and lung procedures. In the past year alone, KFSHRC performed 1,092 transplants, marking a major milestone with the world's first full robotic liver transplant from a living donor.

The OTCoE recently achieved another groundbreaking feat by conducting the world's first full robotic heart transplant. This accomplishment underscores Saudi Arabia's leadership in healthcare innovation and highlights KFSHRC's commitment to advancing medical practices for better patient outcomes. The hospital's achievements will be showcased at the Global Health Exhibition in Riyadh from October 21 to 23, where KFSHRC is a Platinum Sponsor.

KFSHRC's Milestone in Robotic Organ Transplants

Since its inception in 1981, KFSHRC's Organ Transplant Program has completed around 9,000 successful transplants. The hospital has also pioneered solutions to challenges like donor-patient compatibility through its Kidney Paired Donation (KPD) program. This initiative allows for the exchange of living donors whose blood types and tissues do not match their intended recipients.

The KPD program has significantly improved the matching process and reduced waiting times for kidney transplants. It involves simultaneous removal and transplantation of multiple kidneys, enabling over 5,000 kidney transplants since the center began operations. This innovative approach provides more opportunities for patients awaiting transplants.

KFSHRC's efforts extend beyond performing transplants to include prevention and specialized care for patients. In 2023, the hospital launched a Vaccination Clinic specifically for solid organ transplant recipients. This clinic offers personalized vaccination plans tailored to each patient's immune status and type of transplant, aiming to minimize infection risks that could impact transplant success.

In less than a year, this clinic has served 150 patients. A notable achievement includes administering the "Shingrix" vaccine to organ transplant patients, achieving a compliance rate of 73 percent for the first dose and 55 percent for the second dose. This initiative reflects KFSHRC's dedication to protecting patients after complex surgeries.

KFSHRC continues to excel in overcoming challenges related to organ transplantation while enhancing patient care through innovative programs and preventive measures. These efforts not only improve patient experiences but also reinforce Saudi Arabia's position as a leader in global healthcare advancements.
