Abu Sarrah Palaces: Unveiling The Architectural Splendor Of Aseer Region

Situated in Al-Azizia village in Soudah, west of Abha city in the Aseer region, the Abu Sarrah Palaces have become a major draw for tourists. These palaces, covering over 3,000 square meters, are celebrated for their natural beauty, architectural heritage, and ancient artifacts. Restored and maintained since late 2016, they have become a symbol of civilization and tourism in the Aseer region.

Abdulaziz Abu Sarrah, supervisor of Abu Sarrah Palaces, shared that these structures date back to 1835 and include three buildings: Waz'a Palace, Aziz Palace, and Al-Muasla Fort. Aziz and Waz'a palaces each rise six floors high, while Al-Muasla Fort has three floors. All are constructed from local materials like stone and juniper wood, covered with mud and straw.

Architect Abdullah Al-Wathiq highlighted the intricate design of the palaces during a tour. He noted that some rooms lack windows on certain floors to store supplies like grains safely from moisture. The ground floor is used for livestock, while the upper floor is reserved for hosting guests. Three floors are dedicated solely to prayer.

The palaces attract both Saudi and international visitors and host various events. "Our focus is on Vision 2030," said Abdulaziz Abu Sarrah. "We blend traditional styles that honor the history of these grand structures." An open-air café run by local youths offers drinks and food tailored to guests' tastes. The site also includes a restaurant, exhibitions, and seating areas.

Al-Wathiq also pointed out unique architectural features such as lofty ceilings, robust exterior walls, and intricate door carvings. These elements contribute to the distinctiveness of the palaces' design.

The restoration efforts have not only preserved these historical structures but also enhanced their appeal as a tourist destination. Visitors can enjoy a variety of amenities while experiencing the rich cultural heritage of the Aseer region.

The Abu Sarrah Palaces stand as a testament to the region's history and architectural ingenuity. They offer a unique glimpse into the past while providing modern comforts for today's tourists.
