Abu Dhabi’s Visiting Physician Programme Provides Expert Care To Over 3,200 Patients Since Launch

The Department of Health – Abu Dhabi (DoH) reported that 3,277 patients have benefited from the Visiting Physicians Programme since its inception in 2021 through December 2024. This initiative allows patients to consult with renowned international experts for rare and complex medical conditions, enhancing healthcare services in the region.

Since the programme's launch, Abu Dhabi has hosted 37 visiting specialists who have performed 372 surgeries by December 2024. These visiting physicians work closely with local medical teams, sharing expertise and advanced techniques in complex medical fields. This collaboration aims to improve healthcare outcomes across Abu Dhabi.

Visiting Physician Programme Aids Over 3,200 Patients

In November 2024, a significant milestone was achieved when Abu Dhabi completed its first selective dorsal rhizotomy surgery. This procedure was conducted by a highly skilled visiting physician from the United States. Such efforts underscore DoH's dedication to bringing world-class medical talent and practices to Abu Dhabi, aligning healthcare services with global standards.

The programme's primary goal is to offer exceptional healthcare services by partnering with leading global healthcare organisations. By attracting top medical professionals to Abu Dhabi, the programme ensures high-quality and innovative healthcare services are available to those in need.

The top five specialities addressed by visiting practitioners in 2024 include paediatric haematology (bone marrow transplant), plastic surgery (lymphedema and brachial plexus), adult orthopaedic surgeries (complex ankle, foot, shoulder, hand, and scoliosis), paediatric orthopaedics (limb lengthening and deformities), and ophthalmology. These areas highlight the diverse expertise brought into the emirate through this initiative.

Beyond consultations, the programme has significantly enriched knowledge exchange between international experts and local medical teams. This collaboration enhances local expertise, post-surgical rehabilitation care, and overall healthcare outcomes throughout Abu Dhabi.

Commitment to Global Standards

Dr. Noura Khamis Al Ghaithi, Undersecretary of the DoH, stated: "The DoH is committed to creating a holistic world-class healthcare ecosystem for Abu Dhabi residents and visitors so that patients can receive the medical attention they need, in line with global standards and best practices." Her statement reflects the department's commitment to maintaining high standards of care.

This initiative demonstrates DoH's commitment to advancing healthcare services by integrating global best practices into local systems. By continuously attracting international expertise, Abu Dhabi aims to provide residents with access to cutting-edge medical care that meets international benchmarks.
