Tokyo's Cultural Fusion Showcased At Abu Dhabi Tourism Event
The Tokyo Metropolitan Government and the Tokyo Convention & Visitors Bureau (TCVB) recently hosted an event in Abu Dhabi titled "Tokyo Tokyo Old Meets New – Come Discover the Culture of Tokyo." This marked the first time Tokyo held a tourism and cultural promotion event in the city. The initiative aimed to showcase Tokyo as a destination where tradition meets innovation, offering diverse experiences.
The event was graced by several dignitaries, including His Excellency Mohamed Khalifa Al Mubarak, Chairman of the Department of Culture and Tourism - Abu Dhabi, and Her Excellency Governor Yuriko Koike, Governor of Tokyo. Also present were His Excellency Shihab Ahmed Al Faheem, UAE Ambassador to Japan, and His Excellency Ken Okaniwa, Japan's Ambassador to the UAE.

Attendees in Abu Dhabi experienced a blend of pop culture and traditional Japanese art forms such as calligraphy and tea ceremonies. The football manga Captain Tsubasa, known locally as Captain Majid, is particularly popular in Abu Dhabi. This cultural exchange highlighted how Tokyo continuously creates new styles through its unique mix of old and new.
Yoichi Takahashi, creator of Captain Tsubasa, engaged with the audience through a live drawing session. He shared insights into how his work reflects Tokyo's culture and spirit. "The landscapes and lifestyles of Tokyo are deeply embedded in the world of Captain Tsubasa," he stated. Aspiring manga artists from Abu Dhabi watched eagerly as their favourite characters were brought to life.
Governor Yuriko Koike addressed attendees about Tokyo's global appeal and cultural vibrancy. She concluded her speech with an invitation: "We look forward to seeing you in TOKYO." The Tokyo Metropolitan Government and TCVB aim to enhance their tourism promotion efforts across the Middle East, recognising it as a promising region for future travellers to Japan.
This event not only celebrated cultural diversity but also strengthened ties between Japan and the Middle East. By showcasing both traditional arts and modern pop culture, it provided a comprehensive view of what Tokyo has to offer visitors from around the world.
