Abu Dhabi Police Warn Public Of Ramadan Competition Scams And Fake Charities

Abu Dhabi Police have issued a caution on its Facebook page to the public on social media platform about the dangers of engaging in Ramadan competitions purported to offer prizes. These schemes often require participants to share their personal and bank card details under the guise of awarding prize money, with the ulterior motive of defrauding them. The police underscore the necessity for individuals to be vigilant and protect their financial information from these fraudulent activities.

The authorities have also highlighted the rise of fake charitable organizations on social media platforms. These entities, masquerading as legitimate, exploit the charitable inclinations of individuals, especially during the Holy Month of Ramadan, by soliciting donations through unauthorized channels.

Major General Mohammed Suhail Al Rashidi, Director of the Criminal Security Sector at Abu Dhabi Police, elaborated on how criminals deceive their victims by promising them cash rewards from Ramadan competitions. Subsequently, they coax the victims into transferring money under the pretext of securing their non-existent prizes.

Brigadier Rashid Khalaf Al Dhaheri, Director of the Criminal Investigation Directorate, further advised the community to disregard anonymous ads and messages that circulate on social media and messaging apps. These often play on religious and humanitarian emotions to unlawfully gather financial contributions.

He also urged everyone who desires to assist the needy to only engage with officially recognised charitable organisations and institutions. This ensures that their contributions are directed through legally sanctioned channels.

Abu Dhabi Police have provided several avenues for the public to report suspicious activities. Residents can reach out by calling 8002626, sending text messages with relevant security information to 2828, or emailing through the official Abu Dhabi Police website at www.aman.gov.ae. This proactive approach aims to combat cybercrime effectively and safeguard the community from potential scams.
