Abu Dhabi Introduces Innovative Personalised Weight Management Programme To Combat Chronic Diseases
The Department of Health – Abu Dhabi (DoH) and Abu Dhabi Public Health Centre (ADPHC) have introduced a pioneering Personalised Weight Management Programme in the region. This initiative combines digital monitoring, a unique reimbursement model, and customised clinical support to promote sustainable weight management. It aims to lower the risk of chronic diseases like type 2 diabetes, heart disease, and certain cancers, ultimately improving overall health and longevity.
Eligible Thiqa members aged 18 and above, who are clinically identified as overweight or obese, can participate in this programme. It features an innovative reimbursement model that encourages sustained engagement and accountability. The programme is designed to ensure continuous active participation among its members.

Dr. Noura Al Ghaithi, Undersecretary of DoH, emphasised the programme's focus on health rather than just weight. "Our focus is on health – not just weight. This programme supports our vision for an active, health-conscious community, empowering individuals through personalised and science-driven solutions. Weight management requires tailored solutions, not a ‘one-size-fits-all’ approach, and this programme ensures each participant receives precisely what they need to succeed."
The programme addresses the lack of clear pathways in traditional healthcare systems for doctors to support patients in becoming physically active. Dr. Rashid Obaid Al Suwaidi, Director-General of ADPHC, highlighted this gap by stating that even moderate weight loss and increased physical activity can significantly reduce chronic disease risks.
The initiative provides structured guidance with personalised activity plans and continuous monitoring support through digital tools and clinical oversight. This approach empowers the community to proactively manage their health and improve their quality of life.
By integrating these elements into the programme, participants receive comprehensive support tailored to their individual needs. This ensures they have the necessary resources to achieve sustainable weight management goals.
This new programme represents a significant step towards fostering a healthier community in Abu Dhabi by addressing both physical activity and weight management through innovative solutions.
