Abu Dhabi Advances Coastal Transportation With REGENT's Electric Seagliders

The Abu Dhabi Investment Office (ADIO) has recently unveiled a strategic partnership with REGENT, a pioneering electric seaglider manufacturer, to foster the development and manufacturing of this innovative technology within the Smart and Autonomous Vehicles Industry (SAVI) cluster in Masdar City. This collaboration was formalized through a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed at DRIFTx, Abu Dhabi's premier event on smart and autonomous mobility, hosted at the Yas Marina Circuit on the 25th and 26th of April.

This partnership marks a significant milestone in REGENT's global expansion efforts, aiming to fulfill an impressive order book valued at over US$9 billion worldwide. REGENT's seagliders, which are all-electric and operate just above water surfaces, promise to revolutionize the transportation sector by significantly reducing the time and cost associated with moving people and goods between coastal cities. These vehicles combine the speed of airplanes with the cost-effectiveness and accessibility of boats, capable of covering routes up to 180 miles with current battery technology and potentially extending up to 500 miles as next-generation batteries become available.

Abu Dhabi's New Coastal Transport Leap

REGENT plans to leverage the advanced facilities, services, and regulatory ecosystem offered by the SAVI cluster. The collaboration with ADIO aims to secure local support and investment necessary for REGENT to expand its operations in the UAE. This includes workforce development, supply chain integration, and establishing infrastructure for seaglider delivery. With a vision set on initiating a pilot operational campaign in the coming years, REGENT is also targeting local manufacturing of seagliders by the end of this decade.

Badr Al-Olama, Director General of ADIO, expressed confidence in this venture, stating that Abu Dhabi is poised to lead in deploying these electric seagliders globally. He emphasized Abu Dhabi's role as a hub for future industries and its readiness to embrace disruptive changes in mobility that will create vast opportunities for businesses in the forthcoming decades.

Billy Thalheimer, co-founder and CEO of REGENT, highlighted the strategic importance of Abu Dhabi's SAVI cluster for their global expansion and customer demand fulfillment within the region. Thalheimer praised ADIO's rapid support and collaboration in establishing a REGENT hub in Abu Dhabi.

Since its inception, Abu Dhabi's SAVI cluster has been instrumental in redefining transportation and sustainable mobility standards. It provides state-of-the-art R&D and testing facilities that accelerate the development of air, land, and sea applications. By consolidating the entire value chain within one cluster, it fosters synergies from shared technologies that propel the future of mobility not only in the UAE but globally. Furthermore, it solidifies Abu Dhabi's position as a leading destination for global innovators, entrepreneurs, investors, and talent from innovative sectors looking to export locally developed solutions worldwide.
