Abu Dhabi Launches Newborn Genetic Screening Programme For Early Detection

Abu Dhabi has taken a significant leap forward in healthcare with the introduction of the Newborn Genetic Screening Programme. This pioneering initiative is set to redefine the landscape of healthcare by focusing on early detection and diagnosis of genetic conditions in newborns.

By employing whole genome sequencing, the programme aims to screen for over 815 treatable childhood genetic conditions. This makes it among the most extensive of its kind globally, underpinning Abu Dhabi's commitment to advancing genomic-driven medicine.

Abu Dhabi Introduces Newborn Genetic Screening Programme

The initiative, a collaboration between the Department of Health - Abu Dhabi (DoH) and M42, initially rolled out at Kanad Hospital and Danat Al Emarat Hospital, marks the first phase of a broader plan. The programme is currently voluntary and is anticipated to extend across all maternity hospitals in the emirate. Its primary goal is to screen UAE Nationals and children of Emirati mothers, highlighting Abu Dhabi's dedication to preventive healthcare and precision medicine.

The programme's foundation is built on the integration of genomics and artificial intelligence (AI). By analyzing cord blood samples with the consent of parents, healthcare providers can pinpoint conditions such as metabolic disorders, immunodeficiencies, and rare diseases like spinal muscular atrophy.

These efforts are pivotal in Abu Dhabi's strategy to blend genomics into family health aspects, including premarital screening and genetic counseling. The overarching aim is to curtail the prevalence of genetic diseases, aid reproductive decisions, ensure early intervention access, and equip families with essential health information.

Dr. Noura Khamis Al Ghaithi, undersecretary of the Department of Health – Abu Dhabi, encapsulated the initiative's essence, stating: "Healthcare begins long before symptoms appear, and today, empowered by science and technology, we can act earlier than ever before. This programme reflects Abu Dhabi's commitment to leveraging innovation to serve our community, starting from the first days of life. Through early detection, personalised care, and strategic foresight, we are building a future of healthier generations and reinforcing Abu Dhabi's position as a global leader in proactive, precision healthcare."

To ensure the seamless implementation of the programme, DoH has engaged in comprehensive preparations, including workshops to go over the gene panel and patient journey with stakeholders across Abu Dhabi.

Additionally, collaboration with M42 has facilitated the training of 16 paediatricians and neonatologists in genetic counseling practices and the significance of newborn genetic screening at three maternity hospitals: Corniche Hospital, Danat Al Emarat, and Kanad Hospital. Further workshops for obstetricians, midwives, nurses, and technical teams have been conducted to bolster understanding and support for the programme.

Dr. Mohamed Al Ameri, acting director of Genome and Biobank Division, Department of Health – Abu Dhabi, highlighted the future vision, saying: "As we work to integrate genomics into our preventative healthcare infrastructure, we aim to expand this initiative to all maternity hospitals in the emirate, demonstrating how genomics can reshape healthcare, shifting from a one-size-fits-all model to a precise, proactive, and personalised approach that improves patient outcomes."

The initiative promises to deliver results within 21 days, followed by genetic counseling for parents and referrals to multidisciplinary specialists if actionable findings are discovered. Such early detection and intervention are crucial to Abu Dhabi's broader genomics integration strategy, aiming for a future where personalized, preventative healthcare is a norm.

The Newborn Genetic Screening Programme, together with the Premarital Screening Programme, represents a significant stride towards harnessing genomics for informed decision-making and fostering a healthier future for Emirati generations to come.
