Abu Dhabi Rolls Out Green Bus Service In Move Towards Sustainable Transport

The Integrated Transport Centre (Abu Dhabi Mobility) of the Department of Municipalities and Transport has introduced a new Green bus service. These buses, powered by clean hydrogen and electric energy, are part of a broader initiative to make Abu Dhabi Island a public transport green zone by 2030.

The Green Bus Programme is a comprehensive plan to manage public transport buses in Abu Dhabi. It aims to evaluate and select the best technologies in hydrogen and electric power for residents, visitors, and commuters. This will be done through partnerships with international government bodies and bus manufacturers.

The programme also focuses on enhancing Emirati skills through specialised training in hydrogen and electric buses. Practical training opportunities will be available in South Korea and China. The assessment period for this programme began in November 2023 and will end in June 2025.

The new Green Bus service will operate on Route 65, connecting Marina Mall and Shams Boutik in Al Reem Island. This route is part of the effort to transform Abu Dhabi Island into a green zone by 2030.

During the assessment period, bus operators, including drivers, will undergo theoretical and practical training sessions led by Abu Dhabi Mobility's partners. Certified technicians will also receive ongoing training to ensure they can perform daily maintenance and inspections.

The transition from diesel fuel to renewable energy is expected to reduce annual carbon dioxide emissions in Abu Dhabi by over 100,000 metric tonnes. This reduction aligns with Abu Dhabi's commitment to the Paris Agreement and its goal of achieving net-zero emissions by 2050.

This initiative is seen as an innovative platform that encourages collaboration between the public and private sectors. Abu Dhabi Mobility works closely with local and international stakeholders, including government bodies and industry leaders, to implement the Green Bus Programme.

Beyond reducing carbon emissions, the programme aims to establish standard specifications for green buses that meet Abu Dhabi's climate and operational requirements. This effort underscores Abu Dhabi's commitment to sustainability and environmental responsibility.

The Green Bus Programme not only focuses on technology but also on developing local expertise. Specialised training programmes aim to equip Emiratis with the skills needed for maintaining hydrogen and electric buses.
