World’s First Integrated Biosecurity Index Launched By Abu Dhabi And FAO

The Abu Dhabi Agriculture and Food Safety Authority (ADAFSA), in collaboration with the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United NationsFAO), has launched the Integrated Biosecurity Index (IBI), a comprehensive tool designed to evaluate biosecurity across plant and animal health, food safety, and environmental sectors. This innovative index is structured to provide a detailed assessment through its hierarchical system that features six principles, 25 criteria, and 128 sub-indicators, ensuring a thorough examination of biosecurity levels.

The development of the IBI was a collaborative effort between ADAFSA and FAO, culminating in a three-day joint workshop. This event saw the convergence of experts from various sectors including biosecurity, animal health, plant health, and food safety. The focus was on risk assessment and the formulation of effective management plans to enhance biosecurity measures.

This initiative is aimed at fostering knowledge and experience exchange in the realm of biosecurity, setting the stage for the IBI's wider adoption by the FAO and its implementation on a global scale. It is anticipated that the IBI will significantly improve biosecurity assessment methods worldwide, thereby bolstering food security, environmental protection, and the health of both humans and animals.

At the opening of the joint workshop, the strategic importance of the IBI in addressing the mounting challenges to global food security was highlighted along with the urgency of developing such an index in light of the risks posed by globalization, climate change, and the increasing threats to food value chains.

The IBI is poised to offer manifold benefits, including aiding decision-makers in better evaluating biosecurity risks, enhancing countries' capacities to tackle food security challenges, and facilitating stronger international cooperation on biosecurity issues. Dr. Markos Tibbo, Senior Livestock Development Officer at the FAO Subregional Office, shared his satisfaction with the joint effort to develop the IBI and stressed its significance as a pioneering tool in biosecurity assessment.

Dr. Tibbo, during his opening remarks, lauded the IBI as an unprecedented advance in biosecurity assessment. He articulated his belief in the Index's potential to contribute significantly to the achievement of sustainable development goals, particularly in promoting sustainable production and consumption patterns. The workshop not only served as a platform for reviewing the draft indicator but also played a crucial role in training participants on the assessment process, utilizing reliable tools, analyzing results, and refining the registration criteria. This gathering of experts and specialists from government agencies underscored the collaborative spirit driving the IBI's development and its future implementation.

The launch of the Integrated Biosecurity Index marks a significant stride towards enhancing global biosecurity standards. By bringing together a diverse group of stakeholders, ADAFSA and FAO have set in motion a vital initiative that promises to improve food security, environmental stewardship, and public health outcomes through better biosecurity practices. As the world grapples with the complexities of ensuring food safety amid changing global conditions, tools like the IBI will be instrumental in navigating these challenges efficiently and effectively.
