Inaugural Abu Dhabi Autonomous Racing League Kicks Off April 27 With $2.25M Prize
Abu Dhabi is set to host an innovative event on 27th April, the Abu Dhabi Autonomous Racing League (A2RL), at the Yas Marina Circuit, attracting 10,000 spectators. This event, organized by ASPIRE, is hailed as a significant leap in motorsport history, being the largest autonomous racing competition worldwide. Eight teams, including Code19 Racing from the USA and Constructor University from Germany and Switzerland, will vie for a prize purse of US$2.25 million.
The competition will see teams equipped with Dallara Super Formula SF23 cars, provided through a partnership with Japan Race Promotions. These vehicles, known as the fastest open-wheel race cars globally after Formula One, will be modified for autonomous operation by the Technology Innovation Institute (TII). The challenge for participants lies in their ability to program these cars using AI algorithms and machine learning to navigate the track autonomously.

For the first time in history, the race will feature four autonomous cars driving simultaneously on the track. The event will culminate in an Overtaking Challenge to determine the winner, following a series of pre-qualifying races. Additionally, an AI vs Human car race is scheduled, where an autonomous car will compete against former F1 driver Daniil Kvyat, aiming to match or surpass human lap times without GPS assistance.
Faisal Abdulaziz Mohammed Al Bannai, Adviser to the UAE President for Strategic Research and Advanced Technology Affairs and Secretary-General of the Advanced Technology Research Council - ASPIRE’s parent entity, emphasized the event's role in advancing research and development. He highlighted how this competition showcases future skill sets in coding, AI algorithms, and software development.
ADNOC has joined as the title sponsor of A2RL, reflecting its commitment to technological advancement and economic growth. Dr. Sultan bin Ahmed Al Jaber commented on ADNOC's longstanding investment in innovation and its role in powering economic sectors through advanced technology.
Stephane Timpano, CEO of ASPIRE, described A2RL as more than a race; it's a platform for testing and enhancing autonomous vehicle technologies. This initiative aims to improve safety and reliability on public roads with the support of local and international partners.
The A2RL event is a part of Abu Dhabi Mobility Week, which runs from 24th April to 1st May. This week-long event underscores Abu Dhabi's commitment to becoming a global hub for innovation and technological advancement.
