Abu Dhabi To Host World's Most Advanced Waste-to-Energy Facility In Sustainability Push

The Emirates Water and Electricity Company (EWEC), a pivotal entity in the UAE for the integrated coordination of water and electricity supply, has recently entered into a significant concession agreement with a consortium led by Japan-based entities. This consortium includes Marubeni Corporation, Hitachi Zosen Inova AG (HZI), and Japan Overseas Infrastructure Investment Corporation for Transport & Urban Development (JOIN). The collaboration aims to spearhead the development of the Abu Dhabi Waste-to-Energy (WtE) Independent Power Project (IPP), poised to be a global leader in greenfield projects.

The agreement was formalized at the Abu Dhabi Energy Centre, with key figures such as Othman Al Ali, CEO of EWEC, Ali Al Dhaheri, CEO of Tadweer Group, and Roni Araiji, consortium representative from HZI, in attendance. The event was also graced by representatives from the Abu Dhabi Department of Energy. This project is set to revolutionize waste management and energy production in the region, boasting an annual processing capacity of 900,000 tonnes of waste. This capacity is expected to contribute to a reduction of 1.1 million tonnes of carbon emissions annually.

He emphasized EWEC's commitment to integrating sustainable energy sources that meet community needs while promoting the UAE's circular economy development. Tadweer Group's Ali Al Dhaheri expressed enthusiasm for the project's role in environmental sustainability and technological advancement in waste conversion to clean energy.

Isao Suzuki from Marubeni Corporation echoed the sentiments on the importance of this initiative for sustainable development and environmental stewardship. He stressed the project's alignment with Marubeni’s dedication to innovation in energy and waste management sectors. The partnership is in line with the UAE Circular Economy Policy, aiming for sustainable governance and efficient use of resources.

This ambitious project not only sets a new standard for WtE projects in terms of scale and efficiency but also underscores the importance of international collaboration in tackling global challenges. It represents a significant step forward in reducing reliance on landfills, lowering carbon emissions, and supporting the UAE's energy agenda. With such strategic partnerships, Abu Dhabi is well on its way to becoming a model for sustainable waste management and energy production globally.
