Abu Dhabi Public Health Centre Introduces Non-Invasive Liquid Biopsy Test For Colorectal Cancer Screening

The Abu Dhabi Public Health Centre (ADPHC), in collaboration with M42, has launched a non-invasive blood-based screening for colorectal cancer called liquid biopsy. This test is part of the latest advancements in Abu Dhabi's health sector, aiming to enhance cancer prevention and care. It underscores the region's dedication to offering top-tier oncology diagnosis and promoting preventive health measures.

The liquid biopsy test is designed to complement, not replace, colonoscopy, which remains the gold standard for diagnosing colorectal cancer. It plays a vital role in identifying risks and detecting early-stage tumours or precancerous growths in the colon. By improving early detection capabilities, this test marks a significant step forward in combating colorectal cancer.

New Liquid Biopsy Test for Colorectal Cancer in Abu Dhabi

Dr. Ahmed AlKhazraji, Acting Director General of ADPHC, stated that Abu Dhabi is prioritising community health by promoting early cancer detection. He said, "The introduction of an innovative and non-invasive test like liquid biopsy provides a more accessible and comfortable screening option for patients, reducing barriers and encouraging greater participation in regular screenings." This initiative aligns with Abu Dhabi's commitment to population health through advanced screening technologies focused on precision and prevention.

The liquid biopsy will be available as part of the IFHAS comprehensive health screening programme at key healthcare centres of Ambulatory Healthcare Services (AHS) and M42 across Abu Dhabi, Al Ain, and the Al Dhafra Region. Dr. Fahed Al Marzooqi, Deputy COO of M42, remarked that this step will enhance early detection for colorectal cancer in Abu Dhabi. He noted that it addresses one of the leading causes of cancer-related deaths by offering a more accessible screening method.

Routine screening is crucial for preventing colorectal cancer and boosting survival rates. The Department of Health – Abu Dhabi advises regular screenings for all men and women over 40 years old. Colorectal cancer ranks as the third most common type in Abu Dhabi, with males showing higher incidence rates.

Data from 2023 indicates that 67% of new colorectal cancer cases were diagnosed at an advanced stage in Abu Dhabi. This late diagnosis negatively impacts health outcomes and reduces survival rates. The introduction of the liquid biopsy test aims to improve participation in screenings, facilitate early detection, and enhance outcomes for the community.

This initiative represents a significant advancement in public health efforts within Abu Dhabi. By making screenings more accessible and less invasive, it encourages greater participation among residents. Ultimately, this contributes to better health outcomes and supports a healthier future for people across the UAE.
