Abu Dhabi Book Fair 2024: A Global Cultural Congregation Begins

Under the esteemed patronage of President His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, the Abu Dhabi International Book Fair (ADIBF) is set to commence tomorrow, marking its 33rd edition. This year, the fair is distinguished by its extensive international participation, featuring 350 publishers from 90 countries. Notably, this includes 140 publishers making their debut at the event. The ADIBF 2024 stands out for its inclusion of 12 countries participating for the first time, such as Greece, Sri Lanka, Malaysia, Pakistan, Cyprus, Mozambique, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, Kyrgyzstan, and Brazil.

This year's fair is not just a literary event but a cultural spectacle offering a plethora of activities and events for its audience. A significant highlight is the implementation of a comprehensive digital payment system, introduced for the first time in the fair's history. The Arab Republic of Egypt is honoured as the Guest of Honour, presenting a rich cultural programme that mirrors its vast intellectual and civilisational contributions. This selection underscores the enduring and historic ties between Egypt and the UAE, spotlighting Egypt's influential role in enriching global culture and knowledge.

ADIBF 2024: Global Cultural Meet

The ADIBF has chosen the esteemed Naguib Mahfouz as the Focus Personality for this edition. Mahfouz is celebrated for his monumental contributions to Arab culture and literature, notably as the first Arab recipient of the Nobel Prize in Literature. His works, including the acclaimed ‘Cairo Trilogy’ and ‘Children of Gebelawi’, have made significant impacts on Arabic literature. The latter titles were previously banned in Egypt but are now celebrated for their profound influence.

The Cultural Programme at ADIBF 2024 promises engaging sessions that delve into Naguib Mahfouz’s enduring legacy and explore his literary worlds. Among these sessions is an innovative presentation of Mahfouz’s novels in illustrated format, a first at the Abu Dhabi International Book Fair. These sessions aim to provide deeper insights into Mahfouz's works and their significance in contemporary culture.

This year’s edition of ADIBF not only celebrates literary achievements but also fosters cultural exchange and intellectual collaboration on an international scale. With its diverse programme and emphasis on digital innovation, the fair continues to be a pivotal event in the global literary calendar.
