Abu Dhabi To Host IDRA World Congress 2024 Addressing Global Water Scarcity Challenges
The Department of Energy – Abu Dhabi (DoE) has shared details about the upcoming International Desalination and Reuse Association World Congress 2024. Scheduled from December 8 to 12 at ADNEC, the event will focus on "Addressing Water Scarcity." It aims to gather global leaders, experts, and innovators to tackle water scarcity, ensuring equitable and resilient water solutions.
During a recent media briefing, H.E. Dr. Saif Saeed Al Qubaisi emphasised the urgency of addressing water scarcity through innovation and collaboration. He stated, "Addressing water scarcity requires urgency, innovation, and collaboration and in Abu Dhabi, we are committed to delivering answers to this pressing issue, transforming water management and leading global sustainability efforts."

The Congress will feature over 200 speakers from more than 50 countries. Experts will lead discussions across 100+ sessions, panels, and workshops. Topics include technical advancements, regulations, finance, project models in desalination, water reuse, sustainable water management, stewardship, and decarbonisation strategies.
Khalifa Al Qubaisi from ADNEC highlighted the significance of hosting this event in Abu Dhabi. He remarked that it reaffirms Abu Dhabi's leadership in sustainable water solutions and innovation. The Congress provides a platform for stakeholders to exchange knowledge and pioneer solutions for global issues.
Innovative Solutions for Global Challenges
Shannon McCarthy of IDRA noted the importance of innovative solutions like desalination in tackling climate-related challenges such as water scarcity. She said that the Congress would bring together experts from various sectors to find actionable solutions. "Climate change intensifies issues like water scarcity and flooding," she added.
Youth Engagement and Leadership
The DoE will host a special youth programme during the Congress with over ten sessions focused on Abu Dhabi’s water journey. This initiative aims to foster future leaders in water sustainability. The IDRA Young Leaders Program will also offer sessions on desalination and career building in this sector.
In addition to the main programme focusing on themes like water resilience and security, side events include the XPRIZE Water Scarcity Pre-Congress Team Summit. Sponsored by the Mohamed bin Zayed Water Initiative, this summit is part of a US$119 million competition aimed at driving innovation in affordable desalination technologies.
With over 800 attendees registered, the IDRA World Congress 2024 is poised to be a significant platform for fostering partnerships and strategies to address water scarcity challenges globally. This flagship event aims to catalyse innovation towards a sustainable future for generations ahead.
