Abu Dhabi Selected As Historic Host For 2025 Pritzker Architecture Prize Ceremony
The Department of Culture and Tourism – Abu Dhabi (DCT Abu Dhabi) has revealed that the 2025 Pritzker Prize ceremony will be held in Abu Dhabi. This marks a significant milestone for both the UAE and the Middle East, as it is the first time the prestigious event will take place in this region. The Pritzker Architecture Prize is renowned globally for recognising architects whose work exhibits exceptional talent, vision, and dedication.
Abu Dhabi's selection as the host city highlights its growing influence in global architectural discussions. The emirate has been investing in projects that blend heritage with innovation and sustainability. Notable developments include the Cultural Foundation's restoration and modern landmarks like Louvre Abu Dhabi by Jean Nouvel, Zayed National Museum by Lord Norman Foster, and Guggenheim Abu Dhabi by Frank Gehry.

Mohamed Khalifa Al Mubarak, Chairman of DCT Abu Dhabi, expressed pride in hosting the event. "We are deeply honoured that Abu Dhabi has been chosen as the host city for the 2025 Pritzker Architecture Prize, reflecting the recognition Abu Dhabi has received globally as a cultural centre," he stated. He emphasised that this opportunity aligns with their vision to integrate creativity and sustainability into urban development.
Hosting this ceremony underscores Abu Dhabi's role as a hub for creative minds worldwide. It also showcases its commitment to preserving cultural heritage while promoting innovation. The emirate's architectural achievements reflect its dedication to sustainable development and fostering global dialogue through architecture.
Tom Pritzker, Chair of The Hyatt Foundation, noted the significance of holding ceremonies at architecturally important venues. "Each year, the Pritzker Prize upholds a tradition of hosting the ceremony at architecturally and historically significant venues," he explained. He highlighted how Abu Dhabi's skyline features iconic buildings designed by Pritzker Laureates like Jean Nouvel, Norman Foster, and Frank Gehry.
Panel Discussion on Architectural Impact
Coinciding with the event on 3 May at the Cultural Foundation is a public panel discussion led by Liu Jiakun, 2025 Pritzker Prize Laureate. Joining him are fellow Laureates Riken Yamamoto (2024), David Chipperfield (2023), and Francis Kéré (2022). They will discuss architecture's role in cultural expression and envisioning future environments.
These discussions aim to explore how architecture can celebrate cultural diversity while shaping communities positively. By hosting such events, Abu Dhabi continues to position itself as a leader in architectural innovation and cultural exchange on a global scale.
The upcoming ceremony not only celebrates architectural excellence but also reinforces Abu Dhabi's status as a centre for cultural dialogue. Through these efforts, the emirate aims to inspire future generations to appreciate architecture's transformative potential in enriching lives worldwide.
