Abu Dhabi And PwC Release White Paper On Health Equity And Autism

ABU DHABI, 16th May, 2024 (WAM) - Abu Dhabi Public Health Centre (ADPHC) and PwC have released a white paper titled "Towards Health Equity: Bridging the Gap for Individuals with Autism through Public Policy and Technology." This publication was unveiled during Abu Dhabi Global Healthcare Week (ADGHW), hosted by the Department of Health – Abu Dhabi (DoH).

The white paper advocates for comprehensive public policies to support societal inclusion and economic opportunities for individuals with autism. It emphasises the need for improved healthcare access and quality, aiming to enhance their quality of life and integrate their needs into broader community structures.

New Insights on Autism Health Equity

Dr. Ahmed Al Khazraji, Acting Director General of ADPHC Centre, stated, "This white paper underscores our dedication to nurturing inclusive and equitable health environments. At ADPHC, we are committed to protecting public health, elevating health standards, and fostering innovation through proactive initiatives and collaborative alliances."

The white paper is divided into four key sections: The Impact of Social Determinants on Autism; Public Policy: Catalysing Improved Health Equity in Autism Care; Technology as an Enabler for Improving Health Equity for Individuals with Autism; and Actionable Public Policy Strategies for Technological Integration.

It also explores the multifaceted challenges faced by those with autism, contributing to the development of evidence-based policies and programmes. Autism Spectrum Disorder affects 1 in 100 children globally, with increasing prevalence in adults.

Global Health Concern

The white paper aligns with Abu Dhabi’s priority of maintaining the population's physical and mental health. It supports the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, particularly promoting good health and wellbeing for all.

Lina Shadid, partner and Health Industries Leader at PwC Middle East, commented, "Access to healthcare is a universal need that governments must ensure for all citizens. Effective public policy combined with technical transformation can bridge gaps created by social determinants of health."

Call to Action

The white paper concludes with a call to action for stakeholders, including policymakers, healthcare providers, technology developers, and the autism care community. It advocates for a collaborative effort to create an ecosystem that addresses and anticipates the needs of individuals with autism.

By aligning efforts across these domains, the paper envisions a society where health equity becomes a reality for all.
