Abu Dhabi Fund For Development Launches West Coast Road Project To Enhance Seychelles' Infrastructure

The Abu Dhabi Fund for Development (ADFD) has celebrated the opening of the "West Coast Road" project on Mahé Island in Seychelles. This initiative, funded with AED 86.6 million (USD 23.6 million), is part of ADFD's mission to promote sustainable development in partner nations by backing strategic infrastructure projects that foster long-term social and economic growth.

Spanning about 17 kilometres along Mahé Island's western coast, the project involved expanding the road to a width of seven metres and adding 1.5-metre margins on both sides. Service bays were also developed along the route. The enhancements aim to improve traffic flow, making commuting more efficient for people and goods, thus supporting trade and tourism sectors.

Mohammed Saif Al Suwaidi, Director General of ADFD, stated that this project underscores the Fund’s dedication to advancing the UAE’s vision of fostering global partnerships for inclusive and sustainable growth. He mentioned: "The West Coast Road project reinforces ADFD’s strategic approach to supporting infrastructure development across Africa and other regions."

The road improvements include modern rainwater drainage systems, steel and concrete barriers, smart lighting, and advanced traffic management infrastructure. These upgrades are designed to enhance road safety and transport efficiency, contributing significantly to Seychelles' transport network.

ADFD's collaboration with Seychelles began in 1979, supporting 13 development projects worth around AED 517 million so far. These efforts span crucial sectors such as energy, infrastructure, housing, and healthcare, aiding the nation’s sustainable development goals and long-term socioeconomic stability.

Beyond connectivity improvements, the project creates job opportunities for local communities and helps build a more resilient economy. By enhancing economic competitiveness and improving quality of life globally through impactful investments, ADFD empowers nations to achieve their development objectives.

This road rehabilitation marks a significant step in strengthening Seychelles’ transport network. It not only facilitates better traffic flow but also supports trade and tourism sectors by ensuring efficient movement of people and goods across a key coastal artery.
