Abu Dhabi Launches Excellence Award For People Of Determination Inclusion 'Damj' To Promote Equal Opportunities
The Department of Community Development (DCD) in Abu Dhabi recently introduced the Abu Dhabi Excellence Award for People of Determination Inclusion, known as "Damj." This initiative, supported by H.H. Sheikh Khaled bin Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, aims to position Abu Dhabi as a leader in inclusive development. The award encourages innovative programmes that ensure equal opportunities and enhance social well-being for all.
The award's Inclusive Services Pillar recognises entities offering inclusive services across various fields like health, education, and tourism. To qualify, entities must be based in Abu Dhabi and have operated for at least two years. They should also hold a valid commercial licence if they are private sector applicants. Schools must meet specific inclusion standards.

Another key aspect is the Inclusive Employment Pillar, which honours entities fostering inclusive work environments. This pillar includes categories for both public and private sectors. Eligible entities must be based in Abu Dhabi and employ people of determination representing at least 2% of their workforce. A valid commercial licence is required for private sector applicants.
Accessibility Pillar
The Accessibility Pillar acknowledges achievements in creating accessible environments. It covers physical spaces and digital platforms like websites and apps. Entities must be operational in Abu Dhabi for at least two years and possess an active occupancy certificate issued within the past five years by the Department of Municipalities and Transport.
Dr. Layla Al Hyas, Executive Director of the Social Development Sector, highlighted that the "Damj" Award is part of the Abu Dhabi Strategy for People of Determination. She stated that it serves as an incentive platform to promote innovation in disability-inclusive services and work ecosystems, empowering people of determination to engage actively in society.
An award ceremony will take place early next year to honour winning entities from various sectors in Abu Dhabi. Additionally, training workshops are scheduled for 23rd and 24th April to guide interested entities through the award's categories, pillars, eligibility criteria, and evaluation process.
Weekly awareness sessions will be held from February until August in both Arabic and English to educate entities about the award's structure and criteria. One-on-one sessions with the award team can also be requested for tailored guidance throughout the application process.
The "Damj" Award aims to increase participation of people of determination in the labour market through over 80 entities while preparing more than 600 others to become inclusive. It supports their purchasing power and independence, reinforcing community involvement.
Dr. Layla Al Hyas emphasised that this award is not just a recognition tool but a catalyst for sustainable service innovation and inclusive work environments. It aims to empower people of determination economically and socially beyond the strategy’s timeline.
This initiative reflects DCD's commitment to fostering an inclusive society where individual differences are valued as strengths. The award seeks to ensure sustainability and continuity of inclusion efforts beyond its initial cycle, promoting active participation from all societal segments.
