Abu Dhabi Enhances Strategic Cooperation With Singapore And Japan In Water Resource Management And Sustainable Energy
A delegation from the Department of Energy (DoE), led by Dr. Abdulla Humaid Al Jarwan, recently visited Singapore and Japan. The visit aimed to enhance strategic partnerships in water resources management and sustainable energy. The team focused on exchanging knowledge about rainwater and floodwater management using smart technologies and climate-resilient infrastructure.
During their time in Singapore, the delegation was welcomed by Jamal Abdulla Al Suwaidi, the UAE Ambassador. Discussions centred on strengthening cooperation in energy and water sectors, sharing expertise on sustainable infrastructure, and exploring public-private partnerships. They also reviewed Singapore's advanced solutions for rainwater management and flood mitigation.

The DoE delegation sought innovative solutions for water resource planning to support Abu Dhabi's strategic initiatives in water security. They engaged with governmental bodies and leading companies in both countries to forge strategic partnerships. This collaboration aims to leverage advanced technologies to improve resource efficiency.
In Japan, high-level meetings were held with entities like the Japan Water Agency (JWA) and the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism (MLIT). These discussions focused on potential cooperation in water resources management and AI technology applications. The delegation also explored innovative solutions for climate change challenges.
While in Singapore, strategic meetings included discussions with Dr. Amy Khor, Senior Minister of State for Sustainability and the Environment. They explored collaborative avenues in sustainability and water management. Additionally, meetings with the Public Utilities Board (PUB) and SpaceAge Labs focused on AI technologies for water solutions.
The visit featured site visits to landmark projects like Marina Barrage and Bishan-Ang Mo Kio Park, recognised internationally for climate-resilient infrastructure. In Japan, they observed floodwater management technologies at projects such as the Metropolitan Area Outer Underground Discharge Channel.
Commitment to International Collaboration
Dr. Abdulla Humaid Al Jarwan emphasised the DoE's commitment to international collaboration in water resource management and sustainable energy. He stated that working with leading nations helps devise potent solutions for future generations' water and energy security needs.
"We firmly believe at the DoE that tackling climate challenges necessitates effective, integrated actions and well-established international collaborations," he said. The department remains committed to collaborating closely with local and global partners to achieve Abu Dhabi's sustainability goals.
The delegation also examined opportunities for cooperation in renewable energy fields with Tuas Power during their visit. A meeting with the Energy Market Authority (EMA) was held alongside a visit to the Water Research Centre at the National University of Singapore (NUS) to explore research horizons concerning water resources management.
The visit provided a significant opportunity to share experiences with research organisations and pioneering firms in Singapore and Japan. This exchange aids in realising strategic objectives within the sustainability domain by leveraging advanced technologies.
The discussions also covered UAE's clean energy transition efforts towards achieving net zero emissions by 2050. Singapore's practices in stormwater management were examined to support Abu Dhabi's strategies for enhancing sectoral sustainability.
