Abu Dhabi Launches Climate Change Adaptation Plan For Environment Sector
The Environment Agency – Abu Dhabi (EAD) has introduced the Abu Dhabi Climate Change Adaptation Plan for the Environment Sector, covering 2025 to 2050. This detailed plan aims to shield the emirate's natural resources from climate change impacts. It is part of the broader Abu Dhabi Climate Change Strategy 2023–2027 and aligns with the UAE National Climate Change Plan 2017-2050 and COP28's UAE Framework for Global Climate Resilience.
Dr. Shaikha Salem Al Dhaheri, Secretary-General of EAD, stated, "The launch of the Abu Dhabi Climate Change Adaptation Plan for the environment sector marks a defining moment for the environmental future of the emirate. We are moving beyond foresight to decisive actions, preparing for climate realities with unwavering commitment to safeguarding our natural heritage."

The plan targets three vulnerable environmental systems: groundwater, soil, and biodiversity. These elements are crucial for human health, water security, agriculture, and ecosystem health in Abu Dhabi. The strategy identifies numerous climate-induced threats through thorough risk assessments and proposes 142 adaptation actions by 2050. Among these, 86 high-priority projects are set for execution within five years.
Sheikha Al Mazrouei, Executive Director of Integrated Environment Policy and Planning Sector, mentioned that the plan is adaptive and forward-looking. It incorporates current data, evolving climate forecasts, and policy alignment to ensure effective responses over time. As part of a larger national strategy, it supports long-term goals to protect ecosystems and sustain resources.
The development involved over 40 entities from government, academia, civil society, and youth groups. This collaborative effort ensures that diverse perspectives contribute to a comprehensive approach. The plan includes mechanisms for regular reviews and stakeholder engagement to integrate new scientific insights and climate predictions.
This initiative is one of four sectoral plans under a wider emirate-wide adaptation strategy. It complements other national efforts like the UAE National Climate Change Plan 2017-2050 and international commitments such as the National Biodiversity Strategy.
In addition to protecting natural resources, this plan aims to enhance food self-sufficiency and promote sustainable land and water management systems. By doing so, it seeks to improve biodiversity conservation and ecosystem preservation in Abu Dhabi.
Dr. Al Dhaheri emphasised that this achievement demonstrates a commitment to adapting to both current and future climate impacts. It strengthens efforts towards achieving national climate goals by reducing environmental vulnerabilities while safeguarding ecosystems.
The plan supports Abu Dhabi’s strategic ambition to preserve its natural capital over time. It contributes significantly to national efforts aimed at increasing food self-sufficiency while promoting sustainable resource management practices.
This comprehensive roadmap places Abu Dhabi at the forefront of adaptation planning in the region by addressing key environmental challenges proactively.
