Abu Dhabi Civil Family Court Resolves Landmark AED 100 Million Divorce Case For Foreign Couple
The Abu Dhabi Civil Family Court has finalised a significant no-fault divorce case involving a foreign couple, with a financial settlement surpassing AED100 million (US$27 million). This marks the largest divorce settlement of its kind in the GCC region, underscoring Abu Dhabi's prominence as an international legal hub. The couple, originally married in the UK, opted for a no-fault divorce under Abu Dhabi's progressive Civil Marriage Law No. 14 of 2021.
This law, introduced in 2021, is notable for being the first in the Arab region to govern family affairs of foreigners with civil non-religious rules. It covers aspects such as civil marriage, no-fault divorce, and civil wills. The swift resolution of this case within three weeks highlights the efficiency of these new regulations. The couple reached their financial agreement through collaboration with a respected UK family law firm.

The choice to settle their case in Abu Dhabi reflects growing international trust in the local legal system. The couple was drawn to the Abu Dhabi Judicial Department due to its esteemed reputation and ongoing legislative advancements. This confidence is further bolstered by the court's bilingual proceedings in English and Arabic, ensuring transparency and understanding for foreign litigants.
The Abu Dhabi Civil Family Court stands out as the only Family Court in the Gulf region offering bilingual legal proceedings. A specialised team, including British lawyers, prepares cases to ensure that foreign parties can navigate the process with clarity and certainty. This approach has attracted more complex family disputes from international parties seeking modern and fair legal procedures.
This development aligns with Abu Dhabi's commitment to establishing a world-class legal framework for expatriate family matters. The Emirate aims to match international standards seen in countries like the UK, United States, and Scandinavia. Such efforts enhance Abu Dhabi’s appeal as a desirable location for residence, work, and investment.
The increasing number of high-net-worth individuals bringing cases to Abu Dhabi’s courts reflects this trend. These individuals seek accessible legal procedures that are both modern and fair. As a result, Abu Dhabi continues to strengthen its position as an attractive destination for global citizens.
This landmark case not only highlights the effectiveness of Abu Dhabi’s legal reforms but also reinforces its status as a leading centre for resolving complex international family disputes efficiently.
