Abu Dhabi Census 2023: Population Hits 3.79 Million, Marks 83% Increase
The population of Abu Dhabi has reached 3,789,860, according to the primary results of the Abu Dhabi Census 2023. This marks an 83% increase compared to 2011 and is the first census to be based entirely on administrative registers, according to the Statistics Centre - Abu Dhabi (SCAD).
The census data reveals that males make up 67% of the total population, with 2,541,465 people, while females account for 33% with 1,248,395 people. The median age of the population in the emirate is 33 years.The Abu Dhabi region is the largest in terms of population, with 2,495,925 people, representing 66% of the total population. The Al Ain region follows with a population of 1,009,735 people, accounting for 27% of the total population of Abu Dhabi. The Al Dhafra region has a population of 284,205, representing 7%.
Abu Dhabi has experienced an 82% increase in the employed population since 2011, with a total employment of 2,522,390 individuals. This growth reflects the emirate's position as a preferred destination for business, investment, and talent. The workforce is divided into 46 percent white-collar workers and 54% blue-collar workers, highlighting the expansion and diversity of the workforce in Abu Dhabi.
The number of residential and non-residential units in Abu Dhabi has also seen significant growth, increasing by 66% since 2011 to reach a total of 754,555 units. Residential units make up 58% of this figure, with 441,410 units, while non-residential units account for 42 percent, with 313,145 units.
Ahmed Tamim Hisham Al Kuttab, Chairman of the Department of Government Enablement – Abu Dhabi, and Chairman of the Higher Census Committee, praised the support of His Highness Sheikh Khaled bin Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and Chairman of the Abu Dhabi Executive Council, in the successful completion of the Abu Dhabi Census 2023. He emphasized the importance of the census in providing accurate data for decision-making and supporting development plans in the emirate.
Abdulla Gharib Alqemzi, Acting Director General of SCAD, highlighted the center's commitment to align with the emirate's digital transformation goals. He emphasized the use of advanced technologies, including artificial intelligence, to ensure the quality and comprehensiveness of the census data. Alqemzi also emphasized SCAD's commitment to data privacy and confidentiality, stating that the register-based census approach saves time and effort and allows for future implementations within shorter periods.
SCAD is working on developing an integrated and advanced statistical ecosystem in Abu Dhabi. The center aims to unify and organize all aspects of statistical work in the emirate, update statistical frameworks periodically, and provide forward-looking statistics to support decision-makers, researchers, planners, and the public.
